No texting, no talking, no even thinking?
Andy Puddicombe, an expert on concentration, described the transformative power of doing so: 65,438+00 minutes a day will refresh your brain, just stay focused and experience the present.
We live in an extremely complicated world. The pace of life is often crazy, our thoughts are always busy, and we are busy all the time.
With this in mind, I hope you can take some time to think about it. When was the last time you didn't do anything? Just 10 minutes, no interference? When I say nothing, I am nothing. No e-mail, short messages, internet, TV, chatting, food, reading, not even sitting down to think about the past or the future, just doing nothing. I see many vacant faces among you.
My idea is that you will probably take a big step back. This is a very strange thing, right?
The brain is our most precious thing, through which we can experience every moment of life. Only through it can we feel happy, satisfied and emotionally stable as individuals, and at the same time become kind and considerate in the relationship with others. With the help of the brain, we can be focused, creative and conscious, and give full play to our talents in everything we do.
However, we didn't even take the time to care about it. In fact, we spend more time caring about our cars, clothes and hair-well, maybe not our hair, but you know what I'm trying to say.
As a result, of course, we feel stressed. You know, the brain is always running like a washing machine, mixed with many complicated and chaotic feelings, but we really don't know how to deal with it. The sad fact is that we are so distracted that we are no longer in the world we live in now. We missed the most important thing for us, and the crazy thing is that everyone just thinks, Oh, this is life, and we have to live like this. But life really doesn't have to be like this.
I was only 1 1 years old when I took my first meditation class. Believe me, you can think of all the preconceptions about meditation in class: sitting cross-legged on the floor, burning incense, drinking herb tea, being a vegetarian ... everything, but my mother was here and I was interested, so I went with her. I also watched some kung fu movies. Privately, I think I might learn how to fly, but I'm really young.
I think when I was there, like many people, I thought it was just an aspirin that was good for the brain. I meditate for a while when I feel stressed.
I really didn't think this would be an obstacle in essence. Until I was about 20 years old, one thing after another happened in my life. This incident completely changed my life. Suddenly overwhelmed by all kinds of thoughts, submerged in some complicated feelings that I don't know how to deal with. Every time I try to solve one of them, the other one comes out. It was a really hard time.
I think we all have different ways to deal with stress:
Some people will bury themselves in their work and distract themselves from thinking;
Others will ask friends and family for help;
Others drink or start taking drugs;
My own way is to become a monk. So I dropped out of school and went to the Himalayas. I became a monk and began to learn meditation.
People often ask me what I have learned from this experience. Obviously, it has changed many things.
Not only that, this experience also taught me-made me more aware of "now" and had a deeper understanding of this moment. I mean, don't get lost in your own thoughts, don't be distracted, and don't be overwhelmed by all kinds of complicated feelings. On the contrary, I learned how to feel here and now, how to concentrate, and how to live in the present.
I think the moment "now" is seriously underestimated. It sounds ordinary. We only spend so little time to treat "now", but this word is definitely not "ordinary". Just recently, a Harvard survey showed that, on average, our brains spent nearly 47% of their time lost in various thoughts, 47%!
At the same time, this persistent "ideological confusion" is also the direct cause of human unhappiness. Although we won't stay here for long anyway, we are lost in thinking most of the time and may become very unhappy. I don't know, it sounds really sad, especially when we can do something to change the status quo.
Now, there is a positive, practical, feasible and scientifically proven skill that can make our brains healthier, more focused and less distracted.
The beauty of it is that it only takes 10 minutes every day, which can have a great impact on our life. But we need to know how to do it. We need some practice. We need a rule to learn how to concentrate. This is the essence of meditation. It makes us familiar with the present.
We also need to know how to get the maximum benefit from it in the right way. And this is the role of meditation, in case you may be a little confused, because most people think that meditation is to stop thinking, get rid of feelings and control the brain in some way.
But in fact, meditation is not like this. More is to take a step back, see your thoughts clearly, see thoughts come and go, and see feelings come and go. It doesn't need you to distinguish, but to face those thoughts or feelings in a relaxed and focused state.
For example, now, if I am too focused on these balls, then I can't relax and talk to you all the time. Similarly, if I talk to you too relaxed, I can't concentrate on playing. I will throw the ball to the ground.
In life, in meditation, sometimes concentration becomes a little too tense, and life begins to become a bit like this. When you become so nervous, you will lead a very uncomfortable life. Other times, we may put our feet a little too far away from the accelerator (or too relaxed), and this will happen. In meditation, we will eventually fall asleep.
Therefore, we need to find a balance point, a kind of focused relaxation. At this balance point, we can let our thoughts come and go freely and stay away from the troubles in the world.
Now, when we study concentration, one thing that usually happens is that we are suddenly disturbed by an idea.
For example, this is an anxious thought, for example, everything is going well at present, and then we find an anxious thought, like "Oh, I didn't realize my troubles." You pay attention to it and repeat it. "Oh, I'm worried. Oh, I'm really worried. Wow, so much anxiety. " Compared with before we realized it, right? We are anxious about the feeling of anxiety.
You know, it's not normal. We always think of this, even in the state of daily life. Think about it, you have a loose tooth. You know it's a loose tooth, and you know it hurts, but will you pay attention every twenty or thirty seconds? It really hurts. We aggravated the pain, didn't we? We just keep telling ourselves that we always do.
Only by learning to deal with thinking in a natural way and learning to let these things and thinking patterns come and go freely can you be more comfortable. But when you sit down and think in this way, you may see many different patterns. You may find yourself very upset, and you have always been so.
Don't be surprised if you feel a little uneasy when you sit down and do nothing. Your brain will feel the same way. You may find a very boring mind, which is just, almost mechanical, just like you are numbly repeating a series of activities such as getting up, going to work, eating, sleeping, getting up and working. It may even be just a little annoying idea, it just turns around in your mind.
Whatever it is, meditation provides an opportunity and the possibility to take a step back, so that you can see things from different angles and see that things are not always what they seem. We can't change every little thing that happens to us in life, but we can change our feelings. This is the potential of meditation and concentration.
You don't have to burn incense or sit on the floor. What you need to do is take 10 minutes every day to take a step back and experience every minute of the moment, so that you can experience greater concentration, calmness and clarity in your life.
