Details of AE keying

It is understood that AE matting, also known as matting, is a stunt of split screen, but the dividing lines of split screen are mostly regular, such as words, symbols, complex graphics or some natural scenery. Generally speaking, AE keying includes three keying technologies: self-key, foreign key and color key.

Self-key, also called internal key, is a stunt that uses one of the signals involved in keying stunt as the key signal to divide the picture. It requires that the brightness of each point in the key source image must be relatively uniform and high. Self-keying is generally used for the superposition of text and graphics, such as subtitles and logos seen on TV. On the contrary, the key signal of the foreign key is provided by the third key source image, instead of the foreground or background image participating in the key trick.

The color key uses the chromaticity components of the foreground image in the two color signals participating in the key trick to form a key signal. Color keys are widely used in the production of TV programs, such as weather forecast and color key special effects of some TV dramas. Many external scenes can be shot in advance and used to provide background signals when necessary.
