Traditional Chinese medicine believes that obesity is caused by the mixture of excess and deficiency, among which phlegm-dampness and qi-deficiency are more common, which accords with the theory that "fat people have more phlegm-dampness" and "fat people have more qi-deficiency". Phlegm-dampness is manifested as body fat, overeating, sweet and greasy eating, chest tightness and fullness, excessive phlegm, tiredness and aversion to heat, thick and greasy tongue coating and slippery pulse. People with qi deficiency can see that they are fat, lazy to talk, sweating when moving, afraid of cold, swollen face and floating limbs, loss of appetite, listlessness and lethargy, pale tongue with white fur and weak pulse. It should be noted that there are still many patients with excess and deficiency. Regardless of deficiency or excess, we can start with regulating the spleen and stomach, because obesity is mostly caused by dysfunction of the spleen and stomach, and Shui Gu's essence can't pass phlegm, dampness and fatty turbidity.
