It is mainly obtained by decomposition and fractionation of coconut oil.
The melting point of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) is lower than that of long-chain fatty acids (LCFA).
The molecular weight of MCT is smaller than LCT, and its hydrolysis is faster than LCT.
The absorption of MCT by human body does not stimulate the secretion of pancreatic juice, and it is hydrolyzed quickly/completely in the intestinal cavity, as fast as glucose. NCT is mainly absorbed in the form of fatty acids, and rarely in the form of monoglycerides. In the absence of bile salt/pancreatic lipase, most MCT can be absorbed by triglycerides. These triglycerides are hydrolyzed by lipase in intestinal cells.
MCFA- portal vein system entrance-liver-combination of soluble fat form and plasma protein-transport-liver metabolism-ketogenesis (greater than LCT)
Function: Strengthen calcium/magnesium/amino acid absorption. And is widely apply to patients with fat malabsorption, such as patient with impaired fat digestion/absorption/transportation. But it cannot be used for patients with diabetes/ketosis/acidosis/cirrhosis.
