Qatar Table Tennis Open was founded in 1994 and is generally held once a year. The date of the competition is usually set at the end of February or early March. With inexhaustible petrodollars, the upstarts in the Middle East have made this event the biggest prize in international table tennis and won the favor of top players in the world, especially European stars.

The first two competitions were held in 1994 and 1996 respectively. Due to the tradition of Arab countries, there are only two events, men's team and men's singles, and there are no women's events. In the first two competitions, China's top players returned empty-handed.
