The origin, location and builder of Zunyi Lion Bridge.
Lion Bridge in Zunyi, formerly known as Tong Yuan Bridge, was built in Hongwu period of Ming Dynasty (A.D. 1368- 1398) and was destroyed by flood in Jiaqing period of Qing Dynasty (1796- 1820). A rich man in Zunyi had a son in middle age. He thought that Heaven would last forever, so he rebuilt the bridge.

Stone bridge used to be the main road leading to the south of Zunyi. It is the largest bluestone five-hole arch bridge in Zunyi. It is 52.6m long, 7.2m wide and12m high. 1935, the Central Red Army entered the city along Fengle Road (now Wan Li Road). Since liberation, Lion Bridge has been unable to meet the needs of urban development. 1972, a reinforced concrete bridge, Wan Li Bridge, was built about 100 meters downstream of the Lion Bridge, replacing the traffic position of the Lion Bridge. After 1986, the government allocated funds for maintenance, and the stone bridge was completely new, beautifully shaped and beautifully carved, which was used as a cultural landscape with a long history for tourists to watch.

The bridge foundation, pier, bridge body and bridge railing are all made of bluestone, and each stone has been carefully chiseled. In order to reduce the resistance of flowing water, the lower part of the pier has also been made into a double-pointed ship type. From a distance, it looks like four neatly arranged ships are carried between the two banks, and the shape is very beautiful. On the top of the bluestone railing of the bridge, 30 pairs of different stone carvings are symmetrically carved, with bright lines and realistic shapes, including sika deer, cattle, sheep, flowers and bodhi, among which seven pairs of exquisite stone carvings are two pairs of lotus flowers, a pair of stone waist drums, a pair of toads, a pair of Maitreya Buddha with a big belly and two pairs of small stone lions. The whole stone bridge embodies the characteristics of local culture and is a rare artistic treasure.

Because the bridge was destroyed twice by the flood, the villagers thought it was the Dragon King. In order to curb the Dragon King, after the bridge was repaired, a mage was specially invited to do it, and a sword more than ten feet long was hung in the center of each bridge opening, named "Dragon Sword". There are a pair of cast iron buffaloes weighing more than 1000 kg at the bridge head. It is said that whenever the flood comes, the magical iron cow will jump into the river and fight with the dragon king. The deterrent force of the dragon sword under the bridge also prevented the fierce dragon king from crossing the bridge deck, so every time the dragon king was defeated, he had to return to the flood and the bridge was saved.

In the past ten years, this bridge has withstood the attack of natural disasters and the test of years, and has been overloaded by the weight of all kinds of trucks that have roared past the bridge all day, and the bridge body has not been damaged at all. In the 1970s, according to the needs of urban construction and development, the Wan Li Bridge was built dozens of meters downstream of the Lion Bridge. After being put into use, the traffic burden of Lion Bridge has been greatly reduced, and it has become a cultural landscape with a long history for tourists to enjoy.
