Today, we hold the inaugural meeting of the School of Mathematical Sciences, which marks a new page in the development of mathematical chemistry in our school and is also the first major event at the beginning of the new year. On behalf of the Party Committee and the school administration, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to all the teachers and students of the School of Mathematics and Science, and also express my heartfelt thanks to the leading bodies and teachers and students of the School of Information Engineering and the School of Materials Science and Engineering for their support to the School of Mathematics and Science!
The School of Mathematics and Science consists of the Teaching and Research Section of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics of the School of Information Engineering, the Physics Teaching and Research Section of the School of Materials Science and Engineering, the Chemistry Teaching and Research Section, the Physical Experiment Teaching Center and the Chemistry Laboratory. It has four first-level disciplines of mathematics, physics, chemistry, chemical engineering and technology, and mathematics and applied mathematics 1 undergraduate majors.
It is a common practice in the development of domestic universities to separate mathematical and physical chemistry from professional colleges and set up a school of mathematical and physical chemistry with the teaching of basic subjects as the central task. Take universities in Beijing as an example. Nearly half of the universities that focus on science and engineering have set up science colleges or mathematical science colleges. This is also an important measure for our Party committee and school administration to deepen the reform of teaching and scientific research system. This is a reform aimed at strengthening discipline construction, improving the running level of relevant colleges and universities, and improving the education quality of basic science courses. This layout adjustment will directly promote the quality of basic science teaching in our school and provide a solid discipline foundation for outstanding students in various professional colleges. This adjustment is also a slimming action for the Institute of Information Technology and the Institute of Materials, which can make them more accurate in positioning, more concentrated in resources, more distinctive in features and more prominent in advantages. I believe that the establishment of the School of Mathematics and Science will make a fundamental contribution to the development of our school in the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" and even a longer period of time.
A new starting point breeds new hope, and a new college writes a new chapter. I want to take this opportunity to put forward some new requirements for the School of Mathematics and Science:
First, make a clear positioning and make a good development plan. After the establishment of the College of Mathematics and Science, the first task is to define the orientation of the College. On the basis of finding out the family background of the college in detail and thinking deeply about the advantages of the college, the leading group should make a scientific orientation from the reality of the overall development of the school and the allocation of resources and personnel. Should we just be a basic course department and a supporting service-oriented college, or should we gradually become an influential college of mathematics and physics with its own characteristics? It is hoped that the leading group of the School of Mathematics and Science will do a good job in the development plan of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" and even the future 10 as soon as possible, sort out the development ideas, select the right development path, and make steady progress step by step. I also hope that every teacher in the School of Mathematics and Science can have a clear orientation, work hard and strive hard.
Second, elaborate planning and highlight teaching characteristics. Mathematics, physics and chemistry in our school have formed their own advantages and characteristics in the long-term development history, and a large number of teachers with high teaching level have emerged to undertake the teaching tasks of public and professional basic courses such as college mathematics, college physics and college chemistry for a long time. After the establishment of the School of Mathematics and Science, we should formulate the management system and salary system around how to highlight the teaching characteristics at the college level. At the teaching and research section level, we should concentrate on how to maintain and carry forward the original excellent teaching tradition. Strengthening and improving the teaching quality of public basic courses is the central work of the College of Mathematics and Science for a period of time. Needless to say, this is the foundation of the School of Mathematics and Science. It is hoped that the newly established College of Mathematics and Science will learn from similar colleges in brother universities, especially actively explore and innovate in talent training mode, and build a prestigious and quality College of Mathematics and Science in a science and engineering university.
Third, make solid progress and achieve breakthroughs in disciplines. Discipline construction is the leader of school development and college development. At present, mathematics, physics and chemistry in the College of Mathematics and Science have a first-class discipline with a clear discipline structure. Making discipline construction bigger and stronger is the way to strengthen the school. It is hoped that the School of Mathematics and Science will issue a discipline development plan as soon as possible, integrate internal resources, build a discipline team, and unite discipline strength; Increase the introduction of high-level talents and academic leaders, and build a high-quality teacher team; Refine the direction of discipline development, concentrate resources and focus on tackling key problems; Strengthen exchanges between colleges and universities, participate in major geoscience research projects and improve the level of scientific research; Promote breakthroughs in provincial and ministerial key disciplines and key laboratories as soon as possible.
I believe that with the strong support of all parties inside and outside the school, under the leadership of the new leadership team of the college, and with the joint efforts of the faculty and staff of the whole hospital, the College of Mathematics and Science will certainly be able to achieve its established goals.
