What is a vhd file?
VHD is a virtual disk file of Microsoft.

VHD (Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk Format).

At present, Microsoft Virtual PC 2007, Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 and Hyper-V can be used to operate this format.

VirtualBox also provides support for VHD.

Microsoft's VHD file format is a kind of virtual machine hard disk, which can be compressed into a single file and stored in the host's file system, mainly including the system files needed for virtual machine startup.

Application of VHD: Virtual PC is a windows virtual machine, which can virtualize various versions of windows. A windows should be installed on a hard disk partition, but it is a virtual windows, so it is impossible to install it on a separate hard disk partition, so the system files needed for its startup are compressed into VHD format files and placed on the hard disk.

VHD format will also be used in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and Microsoft Windows 7, including Hyper-V, a virtualization technology based on hypervisor. Hyper-V can operate VHD offline, which enables administrators to safely enter the system through VHD files, and administrators can access virtual files (VHD) and perform some offline management tasks.

VHD format is also applied to commercial version, enterprise version and flagship version of Windows Vista, which can make a complete system backup.

WinMount supports mounting VHD files to virtual disks, reading, modifying, adding and deleting the contents of virtual disks, and saving and modifying them as original files.

WinMount supports mounting virtual machine hard disk images VHD(Virtual PC), VDI(Virtual Box) and VMDK(VMWare) as virtual disks, and provides two open modes: read-only and writable.
