Fang Jie Sanzi Yang Qin Decoction was originally designed for the syndromes of excessive phlegm, asthma, cough and unhealthy vital qi. This syndrome is based on spleen deficiency and marked by phlegm and turbidity, especially phlegm and blood stasis and lung qi stagnation. It is necessary to treat it urgently, eliminate phlegm and promote digestion, and reduce qi and asthma. The white mustard seed in the prescription warms the lungs and resolves phlegm, and promotes qi to dissipate stagnation; Perilla reduces qi and phlegm, relieves cough and asthma; Radish helps digestion, guide stagnation, reduce qi and eliminate phlegm. The three herbs are mixed together, each with its own merits. White mustard seed is good at resolving phlegm, perilla seed is good at reducing qi, and radish seed is good at digestion. Clinically, it is necessary to decide which medicine is king and the rest is minister. This prescription is ultimately a palliative, not a permanent cure. It tends to be pungent, dry and warm, which is easy to hurt healthy qi and should not be taken for a long time. Once the disease is relieved after taking it, it is necessary to treat both the symptoms and the root causes. Qi deficiency should not be used alone.

Clinical reports of modern research can also be found in pneumonia, cor pulmonale, chronic pharyngitis, pleural effusion, pneumothorax, plum qi, senile pulmonary constipation, hyperparamia, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, secretory otitis media, mammary gland hyperplasia, verruca plana and other diseases. Experimental studies have proved that Sanziyangqin Decoction has antitussive, expectorant, antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory and digestive effects, and has certain influence on thymus. The study of combination and disassembly shows that perilla seed and white mustard seed have obvious expectorant and antiasthmatic effects. White mustard seed has stronger expectorant effect than perilla seed, which has stronger antiasthmatic effect and radish seed has the strongest antitussive effect. Sanzi decoction is composed of white mustard seed, perilla seed and radish seed, and its antiasthmatic effect is better than that of each single medicine.
