Yu Garden is located in Huangpu District, Shanghai. "Jade" means "Peace" and "Antai", hence the name "Yuyuan Garden", which means "Jade Yue Lao Qin". At present, Yu Garden covers an area of 2 hectares, with jagged pavilions, towering rocks and lush trees. It is famous for its beauty and exquisiteness, and has the characteristics of seeing the big from the small, which embodies the artistic style of Jiangnan garden architecture in Ming and Qing Dynasties.

Pan Yunduan, the owner of the garden, was once an envoy of Sichuan. In order to let his father enjoy his old age, Pan Yunduan started quarrying stones, digging ponds, building pavilions, bamboo and gardens in his vegetable fields from the year before Ming Jiajing (1559). After more than 20 years of painstaking efforts, Yu Garden was built.

At the beginning of the construction of the garden, Yu Garden covers an area of more than 70 mu. It was carefully designed by Zhang Nanyang, a famous gardener in Ming Dynasty, and personally participated in the construction. The whole garden is magnificent in scale and beautiful in scenery.
