Huang Yuanyu's prescription for treating rhinitis, a famous doctor in Qing Dynasty, was published in Four Sages Heart Source.
Specifically, it includes Radix Platycodi (9g), Radix Scrophulariae (9g), Semen Armeniacae Amarum (9g), Pericarpium Citri Tangerinae (9g), Rhizoma Pinelliae (9g), Poria (9g), Radix Glycyrrhizae (6g) and Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens (9g).
This prescription belongs to the category of dietotherapy, and most of the medicines in it are food. Among them, platycodon grandiflorum goes up, opens lung qi, detoxifies and expels pus; Scrophularia ascends, moistening dryness and detoxifying; Almonds are good for health and reduce the qi of lung gold; Orange peel enters the air, clearing lung qi, resolving phlegm and reducing adverse flow; Pinellia ternata is descending, harmonizing stomach and descending adverse; Poria cocos goes up, removes moisture and helps temper rise; Licorice supplements the spleen and stomach and sits in Zhongzhou; Ginger can disperse cold, but it can disperse in exterior cold. Huang Yuanyu believes that the ascending and descending circulation of qi in the human body does not turn well, which leads to qi being blocked on it, so it will cause symptoms such as nasal congestion. Chinese medicine also said before: nine orifices are not harmonious, all belong to the spleen and stomach. (This passage is taken from Luo Dalun's How Doctors See a Doctor.)
Huang Yuanyu explained the root causes of nasal diseases in the eighth volume of Four Sacred Heart Sources as follows:
People with nasal diseases have muddy hands. The lung is confined to the nose, so that qi can not be astringent. The ancestral spirit is in the chest, which is the foundation of keeping the sun. Breathe through the heart and lungs, and so do people who come in and out of the nose. When the lungs descend, the total qi is clear, the nose is blocked, the lungs are reversed, the total qi is blocked, and the nose is blocked. People who cry are also smoked by lung qi. The lungs are clear, dense as fog, and the fog floats into rain and dew, while the bladder is lost, and phlegm and tears are not born. If the lung gold is unclear and the fog is turbid, it will stagnate in the chest diaphragm and produce phlegm, which will be smoked in the nose and become nasal. Phlegm and tears work because Jin Xin didn't fall.
Lung gold produces water, controls fur, and lung qi descends to bladder, and lung qi is a layman, fumigating fur. Exogenous wind-cold, closed fur, stagnation of viscera, inability to descend inside, inability to vent outside, inability to accumulate, and resistance to nasal orifices. The nose is narrow and narrow, so I can't do it, so the impulse is sneezing. The lungs are full of qi, and the nose is full of yin, and tears flow down.
Nasal mucus is clear when lung qi is initially reversed, and lung qi is depressed in the later stage, and it is turbid when it is clear, and sticky when it is sticky. Late, turbid and stale, albino and yellow, smelly and evil. If it does not heal for a long time, the color and taste are like pus, which is called nasal carbuncle, and it is also caused by the reverse flow of lung qi. Among them, the qi is not transported, and the lungs are full of gold, that is, the nose is deep when it is not cold or turbid. For people with deep noses, it's not just muddy tears. ("Su Wen" language. The depression of lung qi is always caused by soil dampness and stomach inversion, while stomach inversion is filled with turbid qi, and the lung has no way to descend.
Therefore, the author thinks that this prescription is generally an effective prescription for treating rhinitis with nasal congestion and runny nose!
