Where did the story of mountains and flowing water come from?
Mountain Flowing Water is one of the top ten ancient songs in China. "High mountains and flowing water" is a metaphor for bosom friends and music. This song is a guqin song, which was divided into two parts in the Tang Dynasty: mountains and flowing water.

"High mountains and flowing water" originated from Liezi Tang Wen. It is said that Boya is good at drumming and Zhong Ziqi is good at listening. Boya Guqin aimed at the mountain, and Zhong Ziqi said, "OK, I'm as steep as Mount Tai." Determined to manage water, Zhong Ziqi said, "Well, the ocean is like a river." Zhong Ziqi will understand what Boya said. When he died as a child, Boya said that there was no bosom friend in the world, but he broke the piano and never played drums all his life. Later, I used "high mountains and flowing water" as a metaphor for a bosom friend or confidant.

After Boya became a famous pianist in the Warring States Period, he felt depressed again because he had never found a confidant.

On one occasion, Boya took a boat through the Hanyang River Estuary and saw towering mountains and flowing water, so he played the song "Mountain Flowing Water" by the river to express his feelings. Just as Boya was playing "Aim at that Mountain" on the piano, a hermit named Zhong Ziqi heard it and cried happily, "Oh, great, it's almost the majestic momentum of Mount Tai!" Boya glanced at Zhong Ziqi in surprise. Immediately, he played the tune "Aim at the Running Water" on the violin. After only playing for a while, Zhong Ziqi cried again: "Great, just like a magnificent river!"

At this moment, Boya could no longer restrain his excitement. He suddenly stood up, took Zhong Ziqi's hand and said, "A bosom friend is hard to meet. I didn't expect to meet someone who really knows me like you here! " Zhong Ziqi also hit it off when he met Boya. As a result, they became good friends and met again the next year.

Who knows, the next year, when Boya came here to play the piano and expect friends, Zhong Ziqi had already passed away. Boya lost her bosom friend, so she broke the piano and vowed never to touch it again. Since then, the story of "Boya's father, mountains and rivers meet bosom friends" has become a much-told story in the music world.
