Lao She came to Shandong around 1930, and taught in cheeloo university of Jinan and Qingdao University of Shandong for seven years. He has a deep affection for Shandong, which is called his "second hometown". According to Lao She's wife Hu Qing, Lao She "often misses the years spent in Shandong from marriage to the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War".

Winter in Jinan was written by Lao She when she was teaching in cheeloo university, Jinan in the spring of 193 1.
