There are many folk customs in the Dragon Boat Festival, among which planting wormwood is one of the important contents. There is a folk proverb that says, "Willows are inserted in Qingming Festival and Ai is inserted in Dragon Boat Festival". On the Dragon Boat Festival, people put wormwood on the lintel of every household and hang it in the hall. Some people use mugwort leaves and calamus to boil water for a bath and spray it in front of and behind the house. The purpose is to avoid evil spirits and epidemics. Poisonous insects and ghosts dare not enter the house to harm people, and this year will be safe.
There is a custom of eating zongzi on the Dragon Boat Festival: According to legend, the ancient poet Qu Yuan committed suicide by throwing himself into the Miluo River on the fifth day of May. In order to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body, people specially wrapped zongzi and threw them into the river to feed the fish. Later generations gradually evolved into eating zongzi to commemorate.
There is also the custom of wearing five-color lines on the Dragon Boat Festival. This is because it is the fifth month of the lunar calendar, which is the season of severe epidemic in midsummer. In view of the evil month in May, the people take active preventive measures to eliminate all kinds of pests and poisons. Five-color stripes can subdue demons and ghosts in order to pray for restraining evil and avoiding poison, and live a long life. Later, the custom of wearing sachets evolved from wearing colored thread.
