Temples flourished from the Tang Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty, especially in the Tang and Song Dynasties, with more than 1000 halls, pavilions, 1000 monks and 100 monks. Since the temple was built, tens of thousands of pilgrims have visited the mountain every year, and many literati and poets have come here and left many hymns. Tang Daizong conferred the title of Master Hongren as [Daman Zen Master], and Southern Tang conferred the title of Guanghua Zen Master. Tang Xuanzong changed the name of the temple to 【 Hui Zhen Zen Master 】, Song Yushu 【 World Ancestral Hall 】, Song Yushu 【 World Zen Forest 】, and Yuan Wenzong named the master 【 Miaoyuan Pujue Zen Master 】, and changed the name of the temple to 【 Dongshan Wuzu Hall 】, referred to as Wuzu Hall for short. This name has been used to this day.

After liberation, temples and historical sites have been properly protected. Since the Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, due to the full implementation of the Party's religious policy, the Huangmei County Party Committee and the county government have attached great importance to the construction of temples, allocated special funds and set up special classes for restoration. 1985, Wuzu Temple was approved by the State Council as a key open temple in the Han area of China. 1994 1 1 month, at the first international symposium on Zen and China culture held in Huangmei county, it was determined that Wuzu Temple was the birthplace of Zen in China and Master Hong Ren was the founder of Zen in China. With the continuous development of China's socialist construction, in the near future, Wuzu Temple will be presented to people with a brand-new look, attracting more Chinese and foreign tourists to visit.

Hong Ren, the fifth ancestor of Zen Buddhism, was founded in the third year of Tang Xianheng (672). Located in Dongshan, east of Huangmei County, Hubei Province12km away. At that time, it was called Dongshan Temple, and later it was renamed Wu Zu Temple.

Hongren, a monk in the Tang Dynasty, made great contributions to the development of Zen. When he was an apprentice in Dongshan Temple, he used the Diamond Sutra instead of the traditional Shurangama Sutra. Since then, this method of teaching and learning has become the decision of Zen. Hongren's method of choosing a successor is also unique. On one occasion, his disciples made their own notes to distinguish their teachers. Gao Xiu said, "I am a bodhi tree, and my heart is like a mirror platform. Always wipe your fingers and don't get dust. " Hong thinks that Huineng has a high understanding and can see the essence of what he has done, but his understanding is slightly inferior and he has not seen the essence of what he has done, so he appointed Huineng as his successor. Zen advocated by Hongren has far-reaching influence and has spread to Southeast Asia and Japan. The number of visitors to Wuzu Temple has not decreased every year, and it is increasing day by day.

Starting from Huangmei county, you can go straight to the foot of Dongshan by car. After getting off the bus, you can climb the mountain without taking the stone road, and then you can reach the mountain gate through the first and second doors. Wuzu Temple is built on the hillside, with pavilions and temples hidden among green trees and bamboos. They are connected by heavy doors and paths. This is a typical gallery-style layout, full of garden interest, and has the artistic conception of "My road is curved, passing through a protected hole, branches and flowers, and retreat to Buddhism". On the central axis of the mountain gate, there are the Heavenly King Hall, the Ursa Major Hall, the Macheng Hall and the Real Person Hall in turn. Behind the real temple is Tiantongmen, and there is a stone road outside, which leads directly to An Baili Peak, the main peak of Dongshan Mountain. There are Notre Dame Hall and Guanyin Hall around Macheng Hall.

Macheng Hall is Pilu Hall. It is said that it was originally built with the help of kind men and women in Macheng County. In ancient times, the traffic was inconvenient. Macheng County was located in Dabie Mountain area, but they crossed the mountains and transported the bricks produced locally to Dongshan Mountain more than 200 kilometers away. This scene touched people in Huangmei County, so they called this hall Macheng Hall as a memorial.

Zhenshentang is the place where Hong Ren parked his real body after his death, so it is called Zhenshentang. Now, the real person has long since disappeared, and only the statue of Hong Ren is enshrined in it. The town temple is the main building of the whole temple, carved with beams and painted with buildings, flying over the eaves and walking on the walls, which is very majestic. At this point, good men believe in women and worship in memory of the sages.

Dongshu has beautiful scenery and many historical sites. It is 3 kilometers long from Tianmen to Bailianfeng. Visitors can not only feel the quiet artistic conception of "birds singing among the clouds and trees flowing in spring", but also enjoy the famous scenic spots such as stupa, Shifang Pagoda, Feihongqiao Pagoda, Daman Zen Master Pagoda, lecture platform, Fa Fa Cave, Snake Cliff, Chessboard Stone, Lotus Cave and Bailianchi. Among them, the Tathagata, the lecture platform and the Lotus Pond of Sakyamuni are all related to Hongren, and they are said to be the place where he buried his bones after his death, the place where he gave lectures before his death, and the place where he planted white lotus himself. These historical sites are more famous, so you must stop and watch them. Don't miss them.

After returning to Huangpi from Wuzu Temple, you can also visit Sizu Temple. Sizu Temple, like Wuzu Temple, is the place where Wuzu's teacher Sizu lives and gives lectures.
