The researchers investigated the relationship between diet and grip strength (an important indicator to measure the muscle strength of the whole body) for participants aged 60-79. The researchers first calculated the dietary inflammation index of all kinds of foods according to 45 nutrients, and then divided them into three groups according to the inflammation index scores of the foods they ate every day. The person with the highest score eats the most food that is easy to cause inflammation; The person with the lowest score ate the food that could inhibit inflammation the most.

During the follow-up period of 12 years, the researchers analyzed the decline of grip strength of participants. The results showed that the grip strength of the group with the highest score decreased more than that of the group with the lowest score, especially for women. Foods with high dietary inflammatory index include meat, cereals, snacks, etc., while foods with low dietary inflammatory index include yellow-green vegetables, beans, seeds, fish and shellfish, spicy seasonings, etc.

Traditionally, eating more meat is more powerful, but the result of this study is just the opposite. From the perspective of inhibiting chronic inflammation, middle-aged and elderly people should eat more vegetables to keep fit.

Extended data:

Vegetables are dark in color and have high nutritional value, and the nutritional value of vegetables is closely related to the color of vegetables. Dark color has high nutritional value, while light color has low nutritional value. The order of arrangement is "green vegetables → yellow and red vegetables → colorless vegetables". Similar vegetables have different nutritional values because of their different colors.

In addition, because each vegetable contains different kinds and quantities of nutrients, the nutritional needs of human body are also diverse, so we should not only pay attention to the color depth of vegetables, but also consider the collocation of various vegetables, and eat vegetables and meat together.
