Shen Congwen had the same influence as Lu Xun in the Republic of China. It's a pity that they didn't become friends with Lu Xun, and even turned against each other in the end, which is even more incomprehensible to the world. So what caused the two great literati to turn against each other and say that they were "old and dead"?
Because a letter of help led to their split. It was wartime. People live in a chaotic environment and often make mistakes because they don't have enough food and shelter. In this case, a woman named Ding Ling couldn't stand such hunger and cold, so she thought of writing a letter for help to Lu Xun at that time and asking for help. However, she deliberately changed her signature to Hugh Yun Yun, because the name Hugh Yun Yun was once used by Shen Congwen, who was once in trouble, to write a manuscript in exchange for the manuscript fee, and was therefore known to the world.
Ding Ling's original intention is to take advantage of everyone's familiarity with the name Hugh Yun Yun in exchange for Lu Xun's attention. In Lu Xun's view, this is a kind of irony, because Lu Xun believes that as an influential figure at that time, not to mention a literati, he should have a tenacious character. How could he easily take the lead and bow to reality? So Lu Xun became angry when he saw this letter, so he misunderstood Shen Congwen in Lu Xun's mind, which led to the breakdown of their relationship.
