Speaking of Chengdu people, what's your first impression?
Sichuanese (not only Chengdu people) love consumption, which is unmatched by northwest people (unfamiliar with other regions). Not to mention Chengdu and surrounding cities, even poor places like Gansu have developed small businesses. At least from the street, they feel very prosperous. In contrast, in many northwest cities with much higher GDP figures, the streets are much deserted. Chengdu is known as the city of complexes, and huge urban complexes have been built. A few years ago (I remember it was around 10), I saw some experts calling for not building so many complexes and consuming so much. Now, except for a few older people, most of them are doing well. I have heard a lecture on real estate before, saying that the root of the prosperity of Chengdu complex is "experiential consumption", that is, catering, entertainment, education, leisure, health and beauty. Experiential consumption is irreplaceable by network economy. The retail industry is greatly impacted by online shopping, but it will not. On the contrary, it will be strengthened by the spread of the network. So many complexes in Chengdu can still make money, mainly by selling things, but by selling experiences. This view is quite interesting, and it is a new thing to learn. But I personally think that the reason why Chengdu's experiential consumption is so developed (to put it bluntly, the tertiary industry is developed) lies in the temperament of Sichuanese who love consumption, entertainment and leisure.
