In the Southern Song Dynasty, Hsiao Zhen, a township sage and assistant minister of the Ministry of War, donated money to build ships and ferry people for free. Later generations renamed the village Xiaojiadu in memory of him. Because of the homonym of "Jia" and "Jiang" dialects, it gradually evolved into Xiaojiangdu, which was officially named as its current name since 1985 was founded. Xiao Jiang's celebrities come forth in large numbers, except Xiao Zhen, a famous minister in the Southern Song Dynasty, and Bao Hui, a famous minister in the Ming Dynasty.
Xiaojiang has a profound cultural background. Xiaojiang Drum was built 400 years ago in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasties and was listed in the intangible cultural heritage list of the city. Xiaguqiao and Bao Hui Tomb are key cultural relics protection units in the county, and Pingyang Plate Carving and flying bear Boxing Base are listed in the sixth and eighth batch of intangible cultural heritage lists in Pingyang County respectively.
