Basic explanation of image number
It is generally believed that image number is a term of Yi-ology, and it is an integral part of Yi-ology from Meng Xi, Jing Fang and Zheng Xuan in Han Dynasty. In the Book of Changes, "image" refers to divinatory symbols and divinatory symbols, that is, what divinatory symbols are like and their time-position relationship; "number" refers to the number of yin and yang and the number of hexagrams, which is the basis of divination.

But before the Han Dynasty, the "image" in the Book of Changes meant "typical things". See the Book of Changes: "It's the image of an old man. The saints have a vision of the world, but they want to describe it appropriately. That's what they say." Therefore, the sage who compiled the Book of Changes has a way to introduce the reality of the world. He intends to introduce typical people or things in many practical situations in the world in the scriptures, and then compare them with these typical things to choose the most suitable thing, so he calls these selected typical things image. ; "Number" means "number shǔ", that is, "number theory" (one by one). The passage about "image number" in Zuo Zhuan Xigong Fifteen Years proves this view. The translation is as follows:

"Zuo Zhuan Xi Gong fifteen years" turtle ①, elephant ② also; (4) (3), (4) also. Things [5] are born [6], then [7], there are images, then there are images, and then there are numbers. What are the failures of my predecessors? What are their advantages? What are their numbers?

The characters on the tortoise shell record typical things; Yarrow divination produces hexagrams, hexagrams and the words written under them, which explain these typical things one by one. After people live together, typical things happen. After they have the typical things, they will show that the typical things are gradually increasing.
