What is "biofilm" and what does it have to do with seedling raising?
The terms "biofilm" and "interface layer" are relatively unfamiliar to many people engaged in abalone culture industry at present, but they have actually become commonplace things, but they have not attracted attention. When an object is immersed in water, tiny organic particles, microorganisms and microalgae begin to attach and grow on its surface, which starts the formation of biofilm. Just like the stone surface in the river is sticky and slippery, the pool wall and the outer wall of the ship turn green or brown, and so on. These are all caused by biofilm formation. In seawater, diatoms and bacteria are the dominant species in biofilm, in addition, there are other organisms, such as ciliates, flagellates, spores and gametophytes of macroalgae, organic debris and microbial secretions. After the seedling picker enters the pool, it is inoculated with algae seeds for culture, and a biofilm mainly composed of benthic diatoms quickly grows on its surface. Abalone larvae feed on it, so biofilm is closely related to the collection and seedling raising of abalone.
