"International Wetland City" represents the highest achievement of a city in wetland ecological protection, and it is an honor with high specifications and heavy weight in urban wetland ecological protection at present. This time, Wuhan can pass the certification, which is the biggest recognition of Wuhan's insistence on wetland protection for many years. Wuhan is rich in wetland resources, with wetland area of162,000 hectares and wetland rate of 18.9%. Known as "the city of 100 lakes and the city of wetlands".

The Convention on Wetlands is an intergovernmental agreement dedicated to the protection and rational utilization of wetland ecosystems. It was concluded in 197 1, and so far there are 172 parties. China joined 1992, and was elected as a member of the Standing Committee in 2005. In order to promote construction through innovation, raise the awareness of wetland protection of governments at all levels and all walks of life, advocate the concept of harmonious coexistence between cities and wetlands, and deeply integrate urban development and wetland protection, in 20 17, the convention organization decided to start the creation, declaration and certification of "international wetland city" on a global scale. In 20 18, 18 cities in the world won the first batch of "International Wetland City" certification, among which six cities in China, including Harbin, Haikou, Yinchuan, Changde, Changshu and Dongying, were among them. Together with seven certified cities, there are 13 international wetland cities in China, the number of which is second to none in the world.
