Where do oysters live?
Oyster (Ostrea gigastnub) is a kind of bivalve Pinctada, which is mainly distributed in temperate tropical waters. It is one of the most resistant aquatic animals, and its shell will be attached to other objects for fixation. Feeding on microalgae and organic debris in the ocean. Its shell is secreted by the lower mantle, which extends from the top of the shell to the edge of the abdomen. It is a membrane formed by two layers of epithelial cells with connective tissue between them. There are muscle fibers in the membrane that make it adhere to the inner surface of the shell. The edge of the mantle thickens to form three folds, and there are radial muscles and annular muscles on the inner folds to make the edge close to the shell.

Living habits

Fixed life

Fix by adhering the shell to other objects. [1] It is generally distributed in intertidal zone and subtidal zone with water depth less than10m. [3]

resist

Oysters are also one of the most resistant aquatic animals. In the past 200 million years, the changing environment in intertidal zone has exercised the strong resistance of oysters to temperature, salinity, common pathogens in the open air and sea. When the water comes out at low tide, it can tolerate the hot and dry weather in summer and adapt to the freezing weather in winter successfully, and can survive without water for 1 ~ 2 weeks or even 1 month. [3]

sex reversal

In natural groups, most oysters are hermaphroditic, and a few are hermaphroditic. Oysters can also "degenerate" spontaneously, and the same individual shows different sexes in different years or under different environmental conditions. [3]

eating habits

Filter food. [1] feeds on microalgae and organic debris in the ocean. [3]

distribution range

oyster

Global distribution. China is rich in oyster resources, which is the hometown of oysters and has a long history of using oysters. As early as more than 2,000 years ago, residents in some areas along the southern coast of China mastered oyster culture technology. At present, there are oyster production bases in Bohai Sea, Yellow Sea, East China Sea and South China Sea, and the main producing areas are Fujian, Guangdong, Shandong, Guangxi, Liaoning and Zhejiang. Among them, oyster is the most important breed.
