Differences and results of two experiments

But the coolest thing about this study is that the researchers measured the brain activity of the subjects, including before and after exercise, while doing the stroud test. They used a technique called "functional near infrared spectroscopy imaging": the subjects wore special hats filled with harmless optical probes. These probes can detect the color changes of blood vessels on the surface. When brain cells respond to stimuli, they need fresh red blood cells filled with oxygen. This activity will replace the blue and anoxic blood in this area. By measuring these color changes, fNIRS can indirectly measure the neural activity in the surface layer of the brain.

The researchers found that in the exercise experiment, the response speed of volunteers in the Strow experiment after exercise was significantly improved. In contrast, the same subjects did not show this improvement in the rest experiment. Exercise also triggered a surge in activity in two areas on the left side of the brain: the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the frontal cortex. Both areas are related to attention and executive function. Moreover, the degree of brain activation caused by exercise is related to the improvement of processing speed.

Why does exercise cause extra activity in the frontal cortex?

This is a chemical signal network that regulates our pressure patterns and pressure responses. Previous studies on rodents have found that exercise causes the brain to release more acetylcholine, norepinephrine and dopamine, which are neurotransmitters involved in stimulating the brain and are known to stimulate the frontal cortex. The volunteers in this new study showed a high level of arousal in the emotional test after exercise, which confirmed these views, and this level of arousal was related to the brain activity in the frontal cortex.

In this earlier study, volunteers were required to do "moderate" exercise: 10 minutes of cycling, which required 50% of their maximum oxygen uptake. This new study found that "light" exercise can also bring the same benefits, in which "light" is defined as consuming 30% of the maximum oxygen uptake.
