Special Olympics

According to the information released by the Organizing Committee of the Special Olympics, the Special Olympics is the number one event of the Special Olympics, and it is a mass sports meeting for children and adults with learning disabilities all over the world according to the Olympic model. Paralympic Games provide opportunities for athletes with physical disabilities to compete, while Special Olympics provide opportunities for athletes with mental retardation to participate. The Summer Special Olympics will be held one year before the Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games will be held immediately after the Olympic Games. Special Olympics and Paralympics are independent organizations recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

The history of Special Olympics is not long. In the early 1960s, eunice kennedy shriver, an Irish-American, held a summer camp for the mentally retarded in Maryland, USA. She was surprised to find that the ability of mentally retarded people in sports and physical activities far exceeded the imagination of many experts, which led to the idea of organizing sports meetings. From 1968, when she founded the first Special Olympics in Chicago, USA, to 2003, more than 160 countries around the world had established Special Olympics organizations, and millions of people with intellectual disabilities around the world participated in this grand event.

If the pursuit of "faster, higher and stronger" in the Olympic Games is to challenge the limits of human beings, then the pursuit of Special Olympics is for participants to challenge his or her personal limits. The mission of Special Olympics is to create conditions and opportunities for children and adults over 8 years old with various learning disabilities to participate in daily Olympic sports training and competitions. Each competition is designed for people with mental retardation with different abilities. The competitions are grouped according to their abilities, not according to their ages, so as to encourage people with mental retardation to display their potential, show their courage, and share happiness, exchange skills and enhance friendship with other athletes and their families during the competition.

The motto of the Special Olympics is: Try bravely and strive for victory.

The spirit of Special Olympics is skills, courage, sharing and happiness that transcend national, political, gender, age, race and religious boundaries.

The goal of the Special Olympics is to give people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to become useful, socially recognized and respected citizens.

Generally speaking, there are 26 events in the Special Olympics. Summer Special Olympics events include water sports (swimming and diving), track and field, badminton, basketball, outdoor bocce, bowling, cycling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, weightlifting, roller skating, sailing, softball, table tennis, tennis, handball and volleyball. Winter Special Olympics includes alpine skiing, hockey, cross-country skiing, figure skating and speed skating.

Special Olympics (referred to as Special Olympics) is an international sports training and competition based on the Olympic spirit and specially set up for the mentally retarded. Special Olympics sports are very rich, from the most basic functional activities to the most advanced competitions, suitable for Special Olympics athletes of all ages and abilities.

Ms. eunice kennedy shriver, the founder of Special Olympics, as the executive vice president of Kennedy Foundation and the founder of Special Olympics, has been devoted to strengthening and improving the quality of life of the mentally disabled for 30 years, enabling them to participate in social life. She is the fifth of the Kennedy couple's nine children. She was born in Brooklyn, Massachusetts, and graduated from Stanford University in California with a degree in social science. After graduation, she worked for the American government in various fields of social work in different capacities. 1957 took over the Kennedy foundation and fought for civil rights for the mentally retarded. Under her leadership, the foundation has made outstanding achievements in medical research and public education. Her work has been internationally recognized and won the highest honor in the United States-the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Purpose of Special Olympics

Special Olympics believes that through correct guidance and encouragement, people with mental retardation can learn skills, share happiness and benefit from it by participating in physical training and competitions.

Special Olympics believes that long-term continuous training can stimulate motor skills. By competing with peers at the same level, we can test their skills, measure their progress and encourage each other to grow.

Special Olympics believes that people with mental retardation can improve their adaptability and grow mentally, physically and socially by participating in physical training and competitions. Special Olympics athletes bring these benefits to daily life, work, study and community activities, making family members closer, making community volunteers and athletes good friends, letting everyone see the value of mentally retarded people, and giving them the opportunity to become useful citizens and get social recognition and respect.

principle

Special Olympics will organize the happiest, most beneficial and most challenging sports training and competitions for Special Olympics athletes around the world according to the following principles and creeds:

The goal of the Special Olympics is to give people with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to become useful, socially recognized and respected citizens.

As a way to achieve this goal, Special Olympics encourages athletes with high ability to participate in normal sports activities and competitions organized by schools and communities from daily training and competitions. Special Olympics athletes have the right to choose to stay in the Special Olympics or continue to participate in the Special Olympics.

Anyone with mental retardation who has reached the age of 8, regardless of the degree of mental retardation, can participate in Special Olympics sports training and competitions.

All Special Olympics athletes can participate in comprehensive and perennial sports training, and coaches with good quality can guide them according to the standard sports rules formulated and adopted by the Special Olympics. Every athlete who participates in the Special Olympics must receive physical training for this sport.

From the most basic functional activities to the most advanced competitions, the Special Olympics plan covers all types of Special Olympics competitions and activities, and is suitable for Special Olympics athletes of all ages and abilities.

Regardless of the economic situation, every athlete can participate in the Special Olympics, receive physical training and participate in competitions under the most favorable conditions, including equipment, management, training, coaching, various ceremonies and sports meetings.

At each award ceremony, in addition to the traditional award of gold, silver and bronze to the top three, all athletes who finish the competition from the fourth to the last will be awarded ribbons engraved with rankings.

Let citizens of all ages participate in Special Olympics activities as volunteers to the greatest extent, and create more opportunities for the public to understand mental retardation.

Although the Special Olympics mainly provides sports training and competitions for the mentally handicapped, it also tries its best to provide athletes with artistic, social and cultural experiences through various activities, such as dancing, art exhibitions, concerts, observation of historical relics, medical treatment, theatrical performances and similar activities.
