As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China has always supported and actively participated in UN peacekeeping operations around the world. From 1992 to this year's 1, China has participated in 15 UN peacekeeping operations and sent more than 6,000 peacekeepers.

Yu Xiansheng is a doctor in the General Hospital of Beijing Military Region in China. In February 2006, his hospital will send personnel to participate in the UN peacekeeping mission of China Army in Liberia. As a hepatobiliary surgeon, Dr. Yu was selected as a candidate. When he learned that he had the opportunity to participate in the UN peacekeeping mission, he said:

"At that time, my mood should be to feel more excited and worried."

Mr. Yu Zhongchang is worried because he doesn't know much about the security situation in Liberia and some tropical diseases, and language is also an obstacle. So Dr. Yu was still under some pressure at that time.

However, after nearly a month of training in physical fitness, English, military and other related fields, Dr. Yu and 42 other doctors from China all passed the exam. I said to:

"After more than 30 days of training, we have made full preparations for many problems. We also asked the first batch of peacekeepers to tell us about the security situation and tasks, and give us targeted training and preparation. The overall situation is that I am still full of confidence before leaving. "

In April, 2006, Yu and his 42 colleagues formed the China Medical Team and went to Liberia for peacekeeping mission.

During their mission in Liberia, members of the China Medical Team worked in a level II hospital of the United Nations and were responsible for providing corresponding medical services to United Nations peacekeepers from various countries. In addition, many people are willing to come to the United Nations hospital for medical treatment. Dr. Yu once participated in the rescue of a critically ill patient. He told us the emergency at that time:

"One morning, while we were still having breakfast, a pregnant woman of 18 years old was taken to our hospital and suffered from massive bleeding. We have no choice but to try our best to save the life of the patient. Finally, after nearly 8 hours of Qi Xin's concerted efforts by all medical staff, the maternal bleeding was controlled and a little boy was successfully born, and the maternal life was finally stable. "

Thanks to its superb medical skills and excellent work style, China Medical Team won the praise of local Liberian people. Dr. Yu said that they were warmly praised by the local people when they finished their tasks and prepared to return to China in June+February last year.

"When we arrived at the airport, some friends, some of our patients, some local people and UN officials all went to the airport to see us off. Local officials said that China peacekeepers, especially the medical team, have made great contributions to the health of the Liberian people. "

In recognition of the outstanding performance of China Medical Team in peacekeeping operations, they were also awarded the United Nations Peacekeeping Medal by the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL).

In Liberia, not only China's military doctors are carrying out UN peacekeeping missions, but also China's engineering teams are contributing to local peace.

The main task of the engineering unit of China peacekeeping force in Liberia is road maintenance. As Liberia has experienced many years of civil war, the roads have been severely damaged. Therefore, the task of the engineering detachment is extremely arduous and arduous, and it is often necessary to work continuously in the field for several months.

Chen Dajun, deputy battalion chief of the engineering detachment, introduced the situation and said:

"The road here is difficult to repair. The roadbed contains a lot of sediments. When it rains, the car will become muddy when it leaves. "

Thanks to the unremitting efforts of engineers and soldiers, the speed of cars driving on dirt roads used to be only 30 kilometers per hour, but now it can reach 60 or even 80 kilometers. Mr. christopher bailey, Governor of Greater Jeddah Province, where the engineering detachment is located, is very grateful to China engineers for their contribution to local construction. He said:

"We thank you. Our relationship with engineers in China is very harmonious. We love them. We are like a family. "

The transportation unit of China peacekeeping force in Liberia is responsible for the transportation of the whole United Nations peacekeeping force in Liberia. Seven days a week, the transportation team transports a lot of materials almost every day. Any delay in transportation may result in hundreds or even thousands of people without drinking water, food or fuel.

On one occasion, the transport team transported materials to a location 500 kilometers away and returned to the camp for five days and five nights due to special circumstances on the road. It took the team members only two days of food and water to complete the task and successfully transported the materials to the destination. The strict discipline and excellent guarantee of the transport unit of the China peacekeeping force in Liberia have been fully affirmed by the commander of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL), Mr. Obiak.

"The contribution of China soldiers is enormous. My colleagues and I often say that without the work of the China Transport Team, our entire army could not operate. "

Not only in Liberia, but also in countries and regions with turbulent situations such as Congo (DRC), Sudan and Lebanon, there are peacekeepers from China. At present, China still has more than 1500 peacekeepers in nine UN mission areas.
