1On July 28th, 976, at 3: 42: 53 am, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred in Tangshan. Houses collapsed, chimneys were broken, the ground was deformed, sand turned and water burst, roads were cracked, tracks were bent, derricks were tilted, and rivers were blocked. A century-old industrial city was razed to the ground in an instant. The severity of the disaster and the great losses are rare in history. After the earthquake, with the approval of the State Council, seven earthquake sites were preserved: Tangshan Iron and Steel Company Club, Tangshan Ceramic Factory Office Building, Tangshan Locomotive and Rolling Stock Factory Cast Steel Workshop, Tangshan No.10 Intermediate People's Court's inland table dislocation, auspicious road tree dislocation, Tangbailu Food Company's garage, and Hebei Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (now Hebei Institute of Technology) library building. The well-preserved earthquake site is the former library building of Hebei Institute of Technology.

Earthquake Monument Square is located in the southwest corner of the intersection of Wenhua Road and Xinhua Road in the city center, which was built on the 0/0 anniversary of the earthquake.
