However, in response to the call of national documents, all localities blindly built sports-featured towns without fully considering local actual needs, not to mention local actual economic, cultural and social benefits, which led to the lack of distinctive features in the construction process. Instead, they built sports-featured towns into "four unlike" towns with no characteristics.

In spatial distribution, there is a serious imbalance in the construction of sports characteristic towns in China. Among the first 96 demonstration sports towns, there are 39 in the eastern region. However, in the western 12 provinces, the number of towns with sports characteristics is obviously less, which is 28, and there is only one demonstration pilot in Tibet, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Gansu and Qinghai provinces. Considering the vast territory of the western region, the gap between the construction of sports characteristic towns in the western region and the eastern region is even more obvious.

At present, most of the 96 demonstration towns with sports and leisure characteristics in China are mainly leisure, accounting for 93.8%. As a big sports country, China's demand for sports products and attention to sports events have obviously increased in recent years. Small towns with industrial sports characteristics can not only meet the needs of the broad masses of people in China for sports products, but also promote China's economic development.

A small town with sports characteristics can not only meet the appreciation needs of China people for professional sports, but also promote economic growth through broadcasting rights and tickets. From this point of view, industrial sports characteristic towns and event sports characteristic towns can not only meet the practical needs of the broad masses of the people in China, but also promote economic development.

In addition, the characteristic town of champion sports can not only provide China athletes with better training conditions, improve their competitive ability and win glory for the motherland, but also reserve outstanding athletes from all echelons for the country. Small towns with industrial sports characteristics, small towns with competition sports characteristics and small towns with champion sports characteristics can all promote the economic development of China.

At the same time, it is also a solid step from a big sports country to a strong sports country, which requires China to strengthen the construction of three sports characteristic towns: industrial sports characteristic town, event sports characteristic town and champion sports characteristic town. According to the data of the first batch of sports and leisure towns published by the State General Administration of Sport, there are 90 leisure towns, 5 leisure towns and only 1 sports event.

At present, the main source of funds for the construction of sports characteristic towns in China is the support of government finance, while social capital investment funds are relatively scarce. The main reasons are large capital demand, slow profit and high risk. The single source of funds for the construction of sports characteristic towns will undoubtedly increase the financial pressure of the government and will also have a greater impact on the speed and quality of the construction of sports characteristic towns.
