Mrs. Chiang Kai-shek's speech

Mr. President, members of the United States Senate, ladies and gentlemen, I am moved by the enthusiasm and generosity of the American people you represent. I didn't know I would talk to you in the Senate today, except to say, "How are you? I am very happy to meet you "and convey the greetings of our people to the American people. However, just before coming, the vice president told me that he wanted me to say a few words to you.

I am not a very good impromptu speaker; In fact, I am not an orator at all; But I'm not very depressed, because I was in Hyde Park the other day and went to the Presidential Library. What I saw there encouraged me and made me think that maybe you wouldn't expect too much from my impromptu speech. What do you think I saw there? I saw it.

Many things. But what interests me most is that there are the first draft, the second draft and so on of the president's speech in a glass box until the sixth draft. I happened to mention this fact to the president yesterday and told him that I was glad that he was such a famous and influential person, but he had to write so many drafts.

Recognized as an excellent speaker. He replied that he sometimes wrote 12 speeches. Therefore, my speech here today is impromptu, and I believe you will forgive me.

The traditional friendship between our two countries has a history of 160 years. I think, I also believe that I am the only one who feels this way now. Your people and mine have many similarities, which are the basis of our friendship.

I want to tell you a short story to illustrate this belief. When General doolittle and his men went to bomb Tokyo, some of you had to parachute back from the interior of China. One of them later told me that he had to send the mail from his boat. When he landed on the land of China, he saw people running towards him, chopping the meat of Tang monks. He just waved his arms and shouted the only Chinese word he knew, "America and China", which means "America". [Applause. Literally translated from Chinese, it means "beautiful country". The boy said that our people almost smiled and hugged him and greeted him like long-lost brothers. He further told me that when he saw our people, he had the idea of going home; This is his first time to China. [Applause. ]

When I was a little girl, I came to your country. I know your people. I live with them. I spent my growing years among you. I speak your language, not only the language in your heart, but also your tongue. So here today, I feel like I'm home. [Applause. ]

However, I believe that I am not the only one who goes home; I think that if the people of China can talk to you in your own language, or if you can understand our language, they will tell you that fundamentally, we are fighting for the same cause [applause]; The "four freedoms" announced by your president.

The world, as the gong of freedom, the gong of freedom of the United Nations and the death knell of the invaders, resounds through our vast land. [Applause. ]

How will we realize these ideals? I think I should tell you a little story that I just thought of. As you know. China is a very old country. We have a history of 5000 years. When we were forced to leave Hankou and enter the mainland to continue to resist aggression, Chiang Kai-shek and I passed through one of our fronts-Changsha Front. One day, we went to Hengyang Mountain, where there is a famous pavilion called "mirror washing pavilion", which was built more than 2000 years ago. You may be interested in the story of that pavilion.

There was an ancient Buddhist temple near that place two thousand years ago. A young monk went there. He sat cross-legged all day, crossed his hands and prayed, mumbling "amita-Buddha!" ! Amita-Buhada! Amita-Buddha! "He muttered to himself day after day, because he wanted grace.

The priest of that temple grinds bricks on stones, hour after hour, day after day, week after week. The young monk is very young and sometimes looks around to see what the old dean is doing. The old priest just went on with his work. So one day, the young monk said to him, "Dad, why do you grind this brick on the stone every day?" The priest replied, "I want to make a mirror with this brick." . The young monk said, "But it's impossible to make bricks into mirrors, Dad." "Yes," said the dean, "you can't get grace by doing nothing but chanting' amita-Buddha' all day. [Applause. ]
