It was founded in the Jiajing period of Sejong in the Ming Dynasty (1550) and completed in the 30th year of Guangxu in the Qing Dynasty (1904). The descendants who lived here because of gathering clans were descendants of Zhou Dunyi, the originator of Neo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty, hence the name Zhou Jia Courtyard. Jiantou Zhoujia Courtyard, located in Jianyantou Village, Hexianguan Town, Lingling District, is an ancient residential community, which consists of six huge residential buildings: the old courtyard, the Red Gate House, the Black Gate House, the new courtyard and the Ziyanfu. It has high cultural relics value and good development prospects. Since 2000, the national and provincial tourism and cultural relics departments have visited here many times. In 2006, it was listed as the eighth batch of cultural relics protection units in Hunan Province.
