How to check bone age
Bone age, referred to as bone age, is also the growth cycle of bones. Many people have different physiological ages and bone ages.

However, the bone age can't be distinguished by naked eyes, and can only be judged by the photos taken by the bone age instrument. Generally, the wrist is the most ideal, where a large number of long bones, short bones and round bones are concentrated, reflecting the growth and maturity of the whole body bones. The method is simple and accurate.

Brief introduction of bone age evaluation methods

In China, with the gradual development of scientific selection of athletes, bone age assessment was introduced into sports after 1979. At first, American G-P method (Grulich-Grojrich, Pyle-Pyle, Professor of Anatomy, Stanford Medical University, USA). They continuously observed more than 193 1- 1942 children from upper-class and wealthy families in the United States and took 2-2 1 x-ray films respectively, and worked out the standard atlas of bone age films. It is a qualitative method to evaluate bone age with G-P standard film.

Later, the British Tanner-whitehouse method was introduced, which was based on middle-class children in Britain. It is a quantitative method to evaluate the development degree of 20 carpal bones and then calculate the bone age by scoring method. 1985 This method was used to evaluate the bone age of children in Tokyo and Beijing when China and Japan jointly carried out the research on children's physique.

1979, according to the hand X-rays of 1936 Beijing children and adolescents aged 0- 18, Chinese medical scientist Professor Li Guozhen made the bone age percentage counting method for the first time in China.

During the period of 1987-88, China's state physical culture and sports commission organized a study on the evaluation standard of China people's bone age, and selected a city in each of the six regions of the country (Harbin, Shijiazhuang, Xi, Changsha, Chongqing and Fuzhou) to photograph the carpal bone age of more than 20,000 children aged 0- 19, and worked out on this basis.

CHN method

Wrist X-ray shooting: the fingers of the left hand are separated, the palm is pressed down against the X-ray box, the hand is in a straight line with the forearm, and the X-ray lens is aimed at the third metacarpal bone, about 90cm away from the back of the hand. X-rays should include all the hand and wrist bones, and the distal radius should be 3-4cm (CHN method stipulates that the left hand should be patted. The United States has studied the bone age of 450 people's left and right hands, and only 65,438 are inconsistent.

Evaluation: CHN method was used to evaluate the development degree of 14 bone, that is, radius, 1, metacarpal bone 3,5, 1, proximal phalanx 3,5, middle phalanx 3,5, 1, distal phalanx 3,5 and skull. Other 12 bones are all divided into 8 grades. Each bone has a different grade. Add up the scores of 14 bone, and then look up the table to evaluate the bone age. Now using computer evaluation software, as long as the grade of each bone is input, the computer will automatically evaluate the bone age. After systematic training and repeated practice, the standard of distinguishing each bone grade was accurately mastered, and the film was evaluated by CHN method.

Brief introduction of bone development process: (taking radius as an example)

In newborns, the epiphysis is still cartilage. Later, with the increase of age, ossification centers began to appear. The ossification center gradually grew up and developed to different stages, showing different shapes. Finally, the epiphysis was completely ossified and integrated with the spine. When evaluating the bone age, the ossification center develops into different shapes, which is the basis for dividing the bone development grade.

Before ossification, the epiphysis seen on the X-ray film was transparent.

Ordinary hospitals can do it, just take a left-hand X-ray, and radiologists know it. The price is not very detailed.
