Are the wells in the Forbidden City used to draw water and drink?
When many friends mention the Forbidden City, they always think of the Forbidden City in the Qing Dynasty. But in fact, the Forbidden City is not only the imperial palace of the Qing Dynasty, but also the imperial palace of the Ming Dynasty. Accurately speaking, the Forbidden City is a palace built during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. After the demise of the Ming dynasty, the royal family of the Qing dynasty did not build a palace again, but lived in the former site of the Ming dynasty palace.

Although this is unreasonable, the emperors of the Qing dynasty still lived with peace of mind. According to the habits of ancient emperors, the founding emperors generally did not regard the former emperors' palaces as their own. But that's what the Qing emperor did, breaking this habit. I want to talk to my friends about the Forbidden City where two emperors lived.

As mentioned above, the Forbidden City was built in the Ming Dynasty. At first, it was inhabited by Ming emperors, and later it became the residence of Qing emperors. It occupies as much as 100 football field and has more than 9,000 houses. In such a big place, people's daily water can't be transported from the palace, so there are more wells.

But not all these wells are used for drinking water. It is said that this place is too big to transport a lot of water from outside the palace in case of fire, so so many wells have been drilled. According to historical records, there were five fires in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the first four were in the Ming Dynasty, and the last one was during the reign of Puyi. It is because of these wells that the Forbidden City can be safely preserved.

Nobles living in ancient palaces would not drink the well water here. The well water they drink comes from Yuquan Mountain in the west of the Summer Palace. Every morning, someone will be responsible for transporting water to the palace. The master drinks mountain spring water outside, and the slave can only drink well water.

Well water in the Forbidden City is generally used for washing vegetables, bathing or sweeping the floor. Because from Ming to Qing, people in the palace either hanged themselves or threw themselves into wells, so the water quality of this well water is not very good. Generally, eunuchs with power in the palace also get spring water from their masters, so they don't need to drink well water, but the little eunuchs at the bottom are poor and can only drink well water with poor water quality.
