Is self-discipline suppressing your own desires?
Self-discipline is not to suppress one's own desires, but a healthy psychological training. Correct self-discipline is not to force yourself to do something, but to let yourself want to do it from the heart.

As Scott Peck said in The Road Few People Walk:

The so-called self-discipline is an important principle to solve the pain of life with a positive attitude, which mainly includes four aspects: delaying satisfaction, taking responsibility, respecting facts and maintaining balance.

Mental illness is caused by self-discipline, because some people can't relax and enjoy learning in the process of self-discipline, forcing themselves to do things they are not good at and don't like, which will lead to excessive tension and eventually lead to the following two consequences:

Lack of self-solving ability leads to mental illness.

Many people hope that apricot loves freedom, but because of the stimulation of some "poisonous chicken soup", in order to achieve efficient operation like a machine, they forcibly destroy their inner happy place.

But this kind of high-intensity self-discipline is very exhausting, which is not a strong performance, but another kind of self-attack.

Because it is a sign of disobedience, people's energy needs to be circulated. If the emotions are excessively suppressed, they lack the ability to resolve themselves. Live like a walking corpse, lifeless, leading to anxiety, tension, self-blame, unhappiness and other psychological problems.

You see, in nature, if you restrict a tree with many pieces of wood, it will only get weaker and weaker, and so will people. Great progress may be made in the first ten years, because the nervous system that has been tense will have problems sooner or later.

Over-repression, the ultimate desire strikes like a scourge.

Although people are animals that adapt to the environment, the just-needed in genes will not change. The animal nature and free indulgence in human nature are not so easy to erase.

Self-discipline advocated in many times is to constantly use many rules and regulations to limit yourself, limit the food you eat, and limit your body shape. After all, you train yourself like a dog, which leads to a sudden and one-off outbreak of "animal nature" in your heart and a one-off attack of desire like a scourge.

It's like a person who is in a state of hunger and thirst for a long time in a dry desert and is very eager for a clear spring.

So what is the correct way of self-discipline?

Analyze it from three aspects:

First, the physiological desire:

If some people grow up in a family that is ashamed of sex, they may feel guilty about sex.

This kind of anxiety, shame and guilt will make people feel that physical desires are immoral and should be curbed, but this kind of "excessive self-discipline" sexual repression is easy to hurt people's body and mind.

Just like the character Cao described by Zhang Ailing in The Golden Lock, she married a paraplegic man for money. Her exuberant passion has nowhere to put, and she has been unhappy all her life. The chains made of gold killed her, and she ruined her daughter's happiness all her life.

Mistaking "sexual repression" for self-discipline will have serious consequences;
