Anibal ruiz led the team through every game in the South American qualifiers from beginning to end-only three coaches can do that. This summer, Ruiz will make his debut at the FIFA World Cup. He hoped to lead his experienced Paraguay team to surpass-at least emulate-the success of the last two World Cups-Paraguay reached the summit twice 16, but lost to France and Germany respectively.
Ruiz, affectionately called Mano by the football community, may have been born in Uruguay, but his heart belongs to Paraguay. He only worked as a coach in his own country for a while and lived in 10 countries. Finally, the experienced coach settled in Paraguay.
Ruiz was born in salto in 194 1. He is a low-key coach and tries to avoid conflicts with others. He is gentle, calm and amiable in front of the media. Mario started his coaching career as an assistant coach on 1976, and he hung up his boots in Costa Rica two years ago. He has coached several prestigious South American club teams, including Uruguay's Nacional and Penarol teams, Paraguay's Olimpia team and the world-famous Argentine River Plate team.
Ruiz has accumulated rich experience in these big-name clubs, which convinced him that he was ready to be a head coach. Paraguay's Olympia team provided him with the opportunity to be a coach, and the fact also proved that Olympia team has a great eye for talents. Ruiz led the team to the national championship in his first season as a coach. In fact, this is only the first time that Ruiz won the Paraguay Super Cup with the ratio of 199 1 when he coached the team.
A year later, after coaching in Mexico and Colombia, Ruiz began to make his tactics serve the national team of El Salvador. He led the team 1994 World Cup. Regrettably, although it was a real heroic battle, El Salvador failed to advance to the final round of CONCACAF qualifiers, thus regretfully passing the 1994 World Cup.
After staying in Mexico again, Ruiz returned to Paraguay in 2000 and began to enjoy the longest team management in his coaching career. His success in Olympia and Guarani, as well as his commendable work in guiding the Paraguayan youth team, led the Paraguayan Football Association to appoint him as the temporary head coach of Paraguay in 2003, replacing Italian coach Cesar cesare maldini. Ruiz quickly repaid the trust of the Paraguayan Football Association. He led Paraguay to some famous victories, such as defeating the world champion Brazil and other teams, so it was not surprising when he officially took charge of Paraguay.
Since then, "Mario" has seen that Paraguayan football is going through a transition period. He recruited new players and players who had never tried before to replace the golden generation players, such as Josie Luis Chilavert, Celso Ayala and Francisco Arce. Facts have proved that Ruiz's efforts have been fruitful. Paraguay won the Four Nations Cup in 2005, and then they achieved even greater success-they won the fourth place in the South American regional qualifiers, thus making their third consecutive appearance in the World Cup.
