8 16 underground nuclear project: 60,000 people took eight years. Why did it suddenly stop when it was almost finished?
1965, Chairman Mao called Premier Zhou to his office and told others to leave before having a long talk with him.

Finally * * * made a difficult decision. They decided to erase a town from the map of China, leaving 60,000 elite soldiers hidden in the darkness.

This is the 8 16 project, which was not known until 2002.

In the era of poverty and backwardness, Qiang Bing dug with a spade for seven years, costing 746 million yuan. Seeing that the project was about to succeed, the country suddenly decided to stop construction and all the soldiers were repatriated. A great red project has become a tourist attraction.

In the 1940s, the United States dropped two atomic bombs over Japan, and the Japanese emperor was forced to declare unconditional surrender. People all over the world were frightened by the power of the atomic bombs.

At first, China was not interested in atomic bombs, but in the subsequent Taiwan Strait crisis and Korean War, the United States repeatedly tried to threaten China with atomic bombs, which seriously endangered China's international rights and interests. So Chairman Mao personally contacted the Soviet Union and obtained technical assistance for China to study nuclear weapons.

Although Sino-Soviet relations were cold in the late 1950s, and the Soviet Union withdrew all the experts and materials, our country still did not stop the research in this field.

Finally, in June 1964 10 16, China's first atomic bomb was successfully detonated in Lop Nur, Xinjiang, and no country dared to threaten China with nuclear weapons.

But has the threat from the world stopped?

1964 Gulf War made Chairman Mao clearly realize that at that time, China's economic lifeline was all concentrated in coastal areas, and military bases were not kept secret enough.

In view of this situation, Chairman Mao asked all provinces to establish their own strategic rear areas, and at the same time he had a long talk with Premier Zhou. At last, they reached an understanding on establishing nuclear power plants in the southwest of China's rear areas.

It is decided to build a nuclear plant in Baitao Town, Fuling, China, which is dedicated to manufacturing nuclear materials. Later, it was classified as a top secret military secret, which was the famous "8 16 Project".

In order to ensure that the 8 16 project can be carried out in absolute secrecy, China directly erased the whole town of Baitao from the map of China, and even deliberately avoided this place when repairing roads and railways, so this small town with complex terrain, located between mountains and on both sides of rivers has become an alternative "Peach Blossom Garden".

In this "Peach Blossom Garden" of new China, there is no "cross-building traffic, dogs and chickens hear each other" and there are only people who dig holes day and night.

The 54th Division of the Corps of Engineers has three regiments with tens of thousands of people, thus forming a brand-new "8342 troops", hollowing out the mountain, digging out the largest cave in the world with a spade, and digging out the later "8 16 engineering site".

How big is this cave?

If we use a more vivid example to describe it, it is that this cave can hold the whole Forbidden City in Beijing.

Because the 8342 Army is an absolutely secret army, 60,000 people in charge of the 8 16 project live and eat in that cave, where the soldiers not only dug the largest cave in the world, but also established a complete human survival system.

For example, supermarkets, hospitals and schools have everything. Those selfless soldiers not only went to the mountains by themselves, but also took their wives and children. It can be said that they have paid time, energy and youth for this.

After seven years of hard excavation, the 8342 troops originally under the 54th Division finally finished their work at 1975 and were ordered to leave Bai Tao.

After they left, a large number of confidential personnel settled in and continued to undertake the leadership work of the project.

By 1984, 85% of the construction projects and 65% of the installation projects have been completed, and the total cost has exceeded 740 million yuan.

Victory is just around the corner, but just as people are about to reap the fruits, the state announced the news that the 8 16 project was suspended indefinitely.

After learning that the 8 16 project was stopped, the project leader immediately fell silent and didn't even know how to announce the news to everyone.

After all, it has been 18 years since the construction started at 1966 and ended at 1984. /kloc-during 0/8 years, the hard work of the soldiers here is incalculable.

Engineers in charge of repairing reservoirs and highways can be praised by others for their projects, but because of their special projects, they can't even leave a photo or a written evidence. Now their years of efforts will fall short. 18 how do soldiers who used to work silently accept it?

Others may not accept it, but the PLA can, just as they came with a shovel when they were ordered. When the order to stop construction came here and the troops were evacuated in an orderly manner, this project, which consumed a lot of manpower and material resources, was forgotten.

In fact, the answer to this question can be roughly divided into three aspects.

First, the reason why China built the 8 16 project is because the main target of our vigilance is the United States and the Soviet Union. Among them, the threat of the Soviet Union is even greater, because the United States is still far from our country, far less than the threat of the Soviet Union.

However, in the middle and late 1980s, the Soviet Union had fallen into the trap of American military competition and its economy was about to collapse. Coupled with the Soviet Union's deep involvement in the Afghan war, the threat to China is quite limited.

Therefore, according to the Party Central Committee's prediction, the Soviet Union will not pose a threat to China for quite some time in the future, and the 8 16 nuclear project has gradually lost its construction significance.

Second, since the 1980s, military science and technology in various countries have developed very rapidly. Nuclear weapons, which once played a strategic deterrent role, have become scarce after countries gradually have a new generation of reconnaissance satellites that can accurately locate them.

In addition, at that time, China also had the trinity nuclear strike capability of vehicle-mounted launch and nuclear submarine. After the completion of the 8 16 project, I am afraid it will only become a target.

Thirdly, in terms of nuclear fuel, China's production technology has made a great leap. In the past, only liquid nuclear fuel could be used, and the future is the stage of solid fuel. In the case of breaking through the technical bottleneck, it is not worth the loss to invest a lot of money in the 8 16 project.

It is precisely because of the influence of the above three reasons that the 8 16 project died and was sealed in the historical portfolio. It was not until April 8, 2002 that China's Ministry of National Defense agreed to decrypt Project 8 16.

It was not until this time that people discovered that there had been such a great project in China, and people realized that there had been a group of great soldiers belonging to the 8342 troops.

Although the 8 16 project was abandoned, the country and the military made a lot of efforts, and it was really a pity to stay there. Therefore, the country later rebuilt the site of 8 16 project. From April 20 10, the site of 8 16 project gradually became a tourism project.

After entering the 8 16 project site, your first impression must be magnificent, because you can see not only various caves and roads, but also indoor buildings such as the main factory building, reflection hall and central control room.

Because of the unremitting efforts of PLA soldiers, when you walk in there, it seems that you are instantly in an underground kingdom. Looking at those gaps, you even seem to go back to those years of hard struggle and see those soldiers who are tireless and fearless while laughing. ...

Today, our country has become so powerful that there is no need to hide it, but we should not forget that this achievement is due to the selfless dedication and heroic sacrifice of those people in the past. As people lament, this country has been well protected by the bravest people.

Pay tribute to the soldiers of the 8342 troops and pay tribute to every great PLA soldier!
