Organized by snooker legend joe davis and others, the first World Championship was held in 1927. The competition was held in many places, and the final was held in Kamkin Hall in Birmingham. In the final, joe davis beat Tom Dennis by 20- 1 1 and won the championship prize of 6. 10 (about 200 pounds today). Albert Cope scored the highest score of 60 points in a single shot in that game.

After joe davis faded out of the World Championships, the champion of 1947 was won by walter Donaldson. But later, Fred Davis won the championship eight times in the nine years from 1948 to 1956.
