Why didn't China have a Renaissance like the West?
Xiaoping said that human rights are first and foremost the right to exist. China's 5,000-year history of civilization is a history of struggle for survival and food. Most of the time, people in China are starving. Any dynasty changes because a large number of people had no food before they rebelled, and so did China's war of liberation. Do you eat when people meet before the 1990s? I have a full stomach and other needs. This is Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, which holds that people's physiological needs are the first, followed by security needs. Only when basic needs are met can dignity, freedom, equality and self-realization be respected.

From the perspective of physical geography, although China is located in the temperate zone, it has superior natural conditions and abundant products. However, compared with the huge population, it is a drop in the ocean. If nothing else, just talk about cultivated land. The terrain of China is mainly mountainous plateau, and the plains suitable for farming are mainly distributed in the eastern narrow strip. Since ancient times, there has been a saying that there are three mountains, four waters and one field. The contradiction between a large population and a small population determines that it is not easy for China people to solve the problem of eating well. In addition, most parts of China belong to temperate monsoon climate, and the contrast of different forces between summer monsoon and winter monsoon in different years leads to the phenomenon of drought here and waterlogging there in the eastern region every year. Whether it is drought or waterlogging, it has a negative impact on grain output, and it also makes a considerable number of people unable to eat.

From the perspective of social management, China has a large population and authoritarian management is more efficient. Therefore, China people worship and yearn for rights. Centralized rule leads some people to eat more and occupy more, on the one hand, there are frozen bones on the road, on the other hand, the wine and meat in Zhumen stink. Most people don't think this is incredible. Those in power deprive most people of food, leaving them with no energy to pursue higher spiritual needs.

Europe, which is about the size of China, is in a stable westerly belt, with no heat in summer and no cold in winter. The weather is favorable almost every year, and there are few floods, droughts or volcanic earthquakes in history (more in southern Europe). The terrain in Europe is dominated by plains, and there are no large mountains to stop it. A mild westerly wind carrying a lot of water vapor can bring water to the hinterland of Europe, so hunger rarely occurs in Europe. Occasionally, the population is relatively small, and there is no threat of basic survival. Naturally, there is a need to pursue a high-level spirit, so they have the possibility of development in politics, philosophy, art and science.

Why did the May 4th Movement miscarry? Because neither subjective nor objective conditions are available. With the progress of science and technology and the renewal of people's ideas (people who are no longer humble are blessed with many children), China people will have more time and energy to pursue spiritual independence, scientific democracy, high-quality life, equality, tolerance and harmony in the art society.
