What is umbilical cord abnormality?
Umbilical cord is the link between fetus and mother. The fetus is connected with the mother through the umbilical cord and placenta for the exchange of nutrients and metabolites. If the umbilical cord is abnormal or compressed, the blood circulation will be blocked, which can directly endanger the life of the fetus. Common umbilical cord abnormalities and dangers:

1. Umbilical cord is too long

If the length of umbilical cord exceeds 70cm, it may wrap around the neck and trunk of the fetus, and may also be knotted and prolapsed. During childbirth, when the fetal head and carcass descend, the umbilical cord of the wound is tightened, and when it is prolapsed, the umbilical cord is pressed. At this time, cord blood circulation can be blocked, leading to fetal asphyxia or death.

2. Umbilical cord is too short

When the length of umbilical cord is shorter than 35 cm, it is easy to have abnormal fetal position. Due to the traction of umbilical cord during delivery, it is easy to cause early placental abruption and uterine inversion, or umbilical cord rupture and blood circulation obstruction. It can directly lead to fetal death and maternal intrauterine bleeding.

3. The umbilical cord is attached to the fetal membrane.

One end of the normal umbilical cord is connected with the umbilical wheel (umbilical eye) of the fetus, and the other end is attached to the center or side of the placenta. If the umbilical cord is attached to the fetal membrane, the umbilical artery extends along the fetal membrane to the placenta. During childbirth, fetal membranes rupture and blood vessels tear, causing bleeding and fetal death.

At present, with the development of medicine, umbilical cord abnormalities can be judged more accurately. Therefore, every pregnant woman should do a good job in perinatal care, diagnose in advance and make a good delivery plan to avoid accidents.
