Hu middle school studied in Botou City, Hebei Province, was admitted to the Department of Chemistry of Nankai University in Tianjin on 1964, and graduated on 1969. At present, he is a professor, doctoral tutor and tutor of foreign students in the Department of Philosophy of the Graduate School of Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. He is also the director of the Chinese Religious Society and the deputy director of the Taoist Health Care Committee of the China Association for the Aged, specializing in the research and teaching of Taoism and Taoist culture.

The main representative works are: Study on Immortal Taoism in Wei and Jin Dynasties-Bao Puzi (monograph), General Theory of Taoism-On Taoist Theory (monograph), Taoism and Immortal Studies (monograph), China Taoist Dictionary (editor-in-chief) and Cultural Characteristics and Development Prospects of Taoism (thesis).
