Fan Zhongyan once said when he was a secretariat in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province: "Either a good doctor or a good doctor". According to Wu Zeng's Notes on Gaizhai, Volume XIII, Wen Willing to Be a Good Doctor, Fan Zhongyan, a famous Confucian in the Song Dynasty, once went to the ancestral temple to ask if he could be a prime minister in the future, and signed that he could not. He asked for another sign and prayed, "I can't be a prime minister, I want to be a good doctor", but the result is still not good. So he sighed and said, "If you can't benefit the people, it's not what a gentleman should do all his life."
A talented and learned person, of course, expects to help a wise monarch govern the country and benefit the world. Even if one of them failed to benefit, it seemed to push him into a ditch. Only the Prime Minister can help everyone. Now that I have been signed, I can't be a prime minister, and the only way to realize my wish of benefiting the whole people is to be a good doctor. If you really become a good doctor with superb medical skills, you can cure the diseases of your loved ones in the world, save the poor in the world and maintain health in the world. Nothing can benefit the people except a good doctor. "
Confucianism regards saving the world and benefiting the world as the highest ideal of life, while medicine, as a means to eliminate diseases and benefit the world, is completely consistent with the Confucian view of benevolence and righteousness. Ancient medical skills are often called "benevolence", which is the reason. Confucian scholars pursue being an official and assisting the king in order to realize their ambition of saving the world and leveling the world. But after all, there are more Confucian scholars than officials, and most Confucian scholars can't be officials, so a considerable number of Confucian scholars who have no official career or are frustrated in officialdom turn to study medicine to complete their ambition of helping the world.
This is the origin of "not being a good doctor, but being a good doctor". Those ambitious Confucian scholars regard being a doctor as their life choice after becoming an official, precisely because the social function of medicine is close to the Confucian thought of practical application. Dai Liang put it well in Yuan Dynasty: "Medicine serves the living and is closest to Confucianism and Taoism".
Master Yin Guang: Gu Deyun, if he is not a good photographer, he must be a good doctor, because he can help the world and save mankind. The ignorant value profits, the poor don't mind, and the rich don't earn, so they can get more thanks. However, with this intention, God will shorten his life span. Its descendants will be difficult to develop. It is also fortunate not to fall into evil ways in the afterlife. It is hopeless to decide that poverty and illness are combined. If we can treat human diseases as our own diseases. At the same time, it is suggested that patients should be vegetarian and read Buddha to eliminate karma. If people feel sincere, they will be trusted. It is a combination of treating physical illness and heart disease, and it is also a serious illness of life and death. With this merit, if you go back to your previous life, you can stay away from the five turbidity forever and climb to the ninth level. Don't hang the photos beside the Buddha. Stay away from the Buddha to avoid being convicted and losing happiness.
Wu Zeng's "A Random Record of Changing Zhai, Volume XIII, Wen Willing to Be a Good Doctor": When I was young, I tried to pray in Yiling Temple, saying, "Is it good?" Don't. After praying, he said, "Otherwise, I want to be a good doctor." Nor is it allowed. Then he said, "It is not a gentleman's ambition for a husband to benefit the people."
To save the people from fire and water. Practice medicine to save lives. A gentleman cares about the people, so he can't help the world and the people of Hui Ze. So the cloud.
At that time, Zhang Zhongjing went to Changsha as a magistrate. During his tenure, he made extensive efforts to make people live a stable life. He devoted himself to the study of medicine and saved countless lives. Zhang Zhongjing successfully realized his ambition all his life, which has always been admired by future generations and has had a far-reaching impact on future generations. For two thousand years, intellectuals who abide by Confucian moral norms have shown the same feelings as Zhang Zhongjing on the road of self-cultivation, family harmony, governing the country and leveling the world. Fan Zhongyan, a famous figure in the Northern Song Dynasty, summed it up more incisively, that is, "either a good doctor or a good doctor". This is the great feeling of traditional intellectuals in China.
Beauty governs the country and saves the people from fire and water; A good doctor can help the world and save lives. Different ways, the same goal, the same greatness. So the ancients always compared doctors with each other. "A good doctor is good, but a mediocre man is a craftsman." . Especially for intellectuals, the career is bumpy and there are few successful people, so becoming a doctor has become another choice for Confucian scholars to realize their ideals. "If the husband gives up a good doctor, there is nothing." The medical practice of Confucian scholars constitutes a unique social stratum-Confucian doctors. They know that a hundred schools of thought contend, are virtuous and care about the world. At the same time, they also came out, studied medicine, wrote books, and were good doctors and good-looking.
There is a story in Mandarin Today: During the Spring and Autumn Period, doctors from the State of Qin were invited to treat Jin Pinggong. After the consultation, he said to the doctor in the state of Jin: "Gong Ping's illness is because he is confused about the gender of women. If this continues, the state of Jin will die. " Zhao Wenzi asked, "Do doctors also take care of state affairs?" The doctor replied: "The doctor governs the country first, and then governs people. Solid medical officer also. " Seeing a doctor is a clever doctor. A wise doctor can run the country first and then cure the disease. This is the true nature of a doctor. In a word, medical countries and medical people are basically the same.
In ancient times, doctors were in a humble position before the Northern Song Dynasty, ranking third among the four great families. There has never been a sacred aura on their heads, but this has not stopped a large number of elites from dedicating themselves to it, making it develop into a unique scientific system and making an ancient nation forever young and healthy.
"Either a good doctor or a good doctor" is the great feeling of ancient intellectuals, which has always reflected deep concern for people themselves and respect for life. In today's society, the division of labor is more detailed, and we don't have to be good doctors, nor do we have to be good doctors. But that kind of care for people and respect for life should always resonate in the depths of our moral realm. I think this is the significance of people setting up statues of medical saints.
This sentence is the self-annotation of China intellectuals. Everyone wants to rule the country and level the world, but how many people have squeezed into the top and climbed to a position where they can keep their word? Therefore, saving the world by hanging pots is another way out and pursuit. Self-termination, real hanging pot, and alternative occupations are all commendable.
When this sentence was published, it should be regarded as what Fan Wenzheng said: "If it is not a good doctor, it is a good doctor." This is in line with his famous saying, "Worry about the world first, and enjoy the world later." This is the fact that Confucian intellectuals in China are in a bad mood, and it is beneficial to the world to advance and retreat, regardless of methods and means or status.
