"Some essential oils have antiviral properties" is the common sense of essential oil lovers, and there are some scientific evidences to support this conclusion. But in the face of novel coronavirus, how can we respond and trust our members? After all, there is no evidence that essential oil is effective for it.
When you are confused, read and think.
During my isolation at home, I reread the relevant chapters of Dr. Kurt's "Healing Intelligence of Essential Oil" and shared my reading notes.
I hope to discuss with you.
Reflections on "Three Physiological Activities of Essential Oil"
In the healing intelligence of essential oil, Dr. Kurt expounded three physiological activities of essential oil.
The physiological activities of essential oils can be classified into three types.
1) nonselective
Non-selectivity is the most common type of activity, which exists in almost all essential oils and low molecular weight and lipophilic monoterpenes. These components have enhancing, antibacterial and antiviral effects, and they can also change the cell membrane.
The antiviral activity seems to be consistent with the non-selective activity of essential oil. For example, herpes can be treated with almost any essential oil. The non-selective activity of essential oil is the result of long-term evolution of plants, which is beneficial to protect plants from various challenges from the environment.
2) selectivity
The second kind of activity is selectivity or specificity, which is mainly attributed to larger molecules and more complex components, such as sesquiterpenes, diterpenes and sesquiterpene lactones, which often interact with specific cellular processes.
3) Interaction of all non-selective and selective components.
All non-selective and selective components of specific plant species work together, showing the unique overall effect of this essential oil. The sum of all the ingredients interacts with our organ system, just as essential oil completes its own tasks in the human body according to the role it plays in plants during its evolution. Therefore, this fine-tuning multidimensional effect of natural ingredients produced by evolution can never be replicated by simply mixing various ingredients in the laboratory.
Chromatographic analysis chart, which is often used to prove that natural essential oil and artificially propagated components are the same, is only a rough approximation. They can't explain many physical, chemical and biological differences between them.
In biological language, the typical quality of rosemary or lavender essential oil is reflected in the tissue level of the whole plant organism. For example, the magical effect of lavender essential oil in treating burns has not been found to be comparable to that of lavender essential oil as a whole.
"Therapeutic Intelligence of Essential Oil" Chapter IV P66
The above discussion has several implications for us:
Almost all essential oils have antiviral activity. Because monoterpenes are extremely common in essential oils. Only the difference in ability requires careful scientific experiments and argumentation to distinguish which is stronger. )
For example, we are familiar with powerful antibacterial and antiviral ingredients:
Eugenol (clove 78%), linalool (coriander 70%, magnolia 70%, basil 53%, lavender 3 1%), geraniol (rose grass 80%), thymol (thyme 30%, oregano 8%) and carvol (oregano 8%).
Then, we can infer that "in a special period, no matter what essential oil you have, you can use it first. It is better to use it than useless, and it will play a certain role."
Single-target specificity of western medicine and multi-target non-selectivity of plant essential oil are typical differences between essential oil and western medicine. This also shows from another side that specific drugs can only deal with specific pathogens, while essential oils are usually widely used.
Chapter 54 above therapeutic intelligence of essential oil
Western medicine developed for a virus is the strongest weapon against the virus, but it also has the biggest weakness, that is, once the virus mutates, it will produce drug resistance. However, the non-selectivity of essential oil can interfere with multiple molecular targets, and the essential oil can still inactivate the virus no matter what slight variation occurs in the protein sequence of the virus. In other words, it is difficult for viruses to develop resistance to essential oils.
3. The characteristics of "non-selectivity" and "interaction between selectivity and non-selectivity" of essential oil are selected by the environment after a long evolution of plants. It is the growth ability of plants after 2.5 billion years of trial and error, mutation and adaptation. Although our current scientific level is not fully understood, it will help us to understand and learn from the ideas of biology and evolution.
Therefore, it is difficult to achieve the quality of natural essential oil by artificial synthesis and replication. When human health is threatened and orthodox medicine is in trouble, it is definitely worth trying with the help of natural essential oil.
Thoughts on "How to Deal with Influenza Virus with Essential Oil"
Let's take a look at Dr. Kurt's advice on how to deal with influenza virus, which should be enlightening:
"There are two key points in using essential oils to treat influenza: First, essential oils can effectively fight influenza viruses. Second, it is difficult for essential oil to reach the infected site smoothly. Based on the second point, treating influenza with essential oil is not as magical and effective as treating herpes or even the common cold. Once the influenza virus infects lung tissue, typical symptoms will appear, such as weakness, joint pain, kidney pain and fever, and it is usually not feasible to simply "cut off" the infection with high doses of essential oil.
The correct way is to use essential oil to control the disease and prevent secondary bacterial infection during influenza. If there is no essential oil, it is very common to have a secondary bacterial infection in the sinus cavity or bronchus. The main purpose is to stabilize the disease, prevent spread and prevent complications.
This sounds a bit negative, but it turns out to be a reasonable choice. What's important is that it avoids using antibiotics to treat secondary bacterial infections. By putting the body through this process, the immune system will gather strength and have a chance to defeat the virus, usually becoming stronger after the onset. "-the healing intelligence of essential oil, chapter 10, P 138.
There is a saying circulating on the Internet these days, "Since alcohol can kill novel coronavirus, then drinking a lot can kill the virus." Now it has been refuted, and everyone knows that this is impossible. Because 75% alcohol is drunk in the stomach, it is difficult to reach the lungs, even if there is a small part in the blood, it is difficult to reach the concentration needed to kill the virus. On the contrary, drinking a lot will reduce human immunity.
For novel coronavirus, the difficulty is not how to kill it. Because in vitro, there are many ways to kill the virus. It is reported that ethanol, ether, chlorine-containing disinfectants and high temperature can kill the virus. The question is: when the virus has entered the lungs, how do you kill it and avoid secondary bacterial infection?
The use of essential oils actually faces the same difficulties. Many in vitro experiments have proved that essential oil can inhibit the reproduction of viruses and bacteria, so essential oil is effective as an in vitro disinfectant (to be further confirmed). However, when the lungs are infected by the virus, the virus will multiply rapidly in the body, and it is difficult for the essential oil to reach the infected lungs directly in a large enough dose and concentration.
Dr. Kurt's suggestion to deal with influenza is actually a change of thinking, from the targeted use of drugs to the use of essential oils to change the overall immune state and prevent secondary infection. This is similar to the treatment method used in Wuhan now-supportive therapy. (Support treatment: maintain the patient's survival by means of assisted breathing, anti-infection and body fluid supplement, and then wait for the patient's own immune system to eliminate the invading virus)
It is necessary to explain here, what is secondary infection?
When a human body is infected with a pathogen (such as coronavirus), its immunity will drop rapidly. Other pathogens (bacteria, viruses, etc.). ) lurking in the body or in vitro will take the opportunity to cause infection in other organs or tissues. This is a major challenge for patients.
The non-selectivity and multiple targeting characteristics of essential oil can deal with a variety of bacteria and viruses at the same time, which is very suitable for preventing secondary infection.
There is another fact that deserves our deep thought:
It seems to be a difficult and long process to develop targeted specific drugs for viruses. It has been 17 years since SARS in 2003. So far, no specific drugs have been developed, only vaccines have been developed, and SARS has disappeared two years after its outbreak.
It is reported that the vaccine in novel coronavirus will take 2-3 months at the earliest.
It's not that the research and development of specific drugs and vaccines is not important, but I'm afraid it can't hydrolyze thirst far away. Fighting against SARS does not depend on directly killing the SARS virus, but on restoring and enhancing the function of the human body, so that the immune system of the human body can eliminate the virus. Of course, socialized isolation measures also play a decisive role in avoiding further spread.
So it can be said that "the human immune system is the best specific medicine".
To sum up:
How to deal with viruses in family isolation?
Three suggestions for reference:
The first level: isolation is always the most effective measure. Strictly abide by the requirements of the country, and don't take it lightly just because there are essential oils.
The second barrier: make every effort to keep the virus out of the body and do a good job in external protection and disinfection.
The third level: improve your immunity, which is the root of whether you can overcome it in an emergency.
Even if you are isolated at home, you should exercise as much as possible, go to bed early, get enough sleep, ventilate and bask in the sun, and take care of your immune system with essential oil therapy.

Domestic related research
The following two materials are domestic scientists' research on antiviral effect of essential oil. I am very happy and proud to see these materials. The research of essential oil therapy is no longer the exclusive domain of foreign scientists, and we are catching up.
A paper was jointly studied by the Department of Respiratory Medicine of the First Affiliated Hospital of Suzhou University and the University of Oklahoma, and published in BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine:
Link: Defensive compound essential oil reduces influenza virus infection: an in vitro study of MDCK cells.
The virus can be reduced by 90% by ultra-high dilution and the concentration of 1:4000. The experimental conclusion is that essential oil can significantly reduce the infectivity of influenza virus in vitro.
From August 2065438 to August 2009, a PPT was hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of China. At the first China Essential Oil Science and Education Forum held in Shanghai, Dr. Ma Li from the Aromatic Plants Research and Development Center of Shanghai Jiaotong University and Professor Yao Lei jointly published the Research Progress of Substituting Antibiotics with Plant Essential Oils.
It can be seen that the main mechanism of essential oil on bacteria is to destroy the cell membrane, so that effective components or antibodies can enter the cells of microorganisms and destroy them. Although coronavirus is not in cell form, it also has an envelope to protect itself. Therefore, the mechanism of destroying cell membrane should also be meaningful to the virus.
Some essential oils with antibacterial and antiviral properties are listed above.
The above data also strongly illustrate the non-selectivity and multiple targeting characteristics of essential oils. And it is very important that it has no harm to the beneficial flora of human body. How far is "essential oil replacing antibiotics"?
summary
① The antiviral activity exists in almost all essential oils, and the effective components are monoterpenes.
(2) The non-selective multi-target characteristics of essential oil determine that essential oil is effective against multiple pathogens and targets, widely used and not prone to drug resistance.
③ The healing characteristics of essential oils are evolved by plants in response to pathogens in the environment.
④ The difficulty of antivirus of essential oil lies not in killing virus in vitro, but in how to get there effectively after a large number of viruses are infected in the lungs.
⑤ Preventing secondary infection is what essential oil is good at.
⑥ There is no specific medicine in novel coronavirus, so it may be unrealistic to wait for it. The human immune system is the best specific medicine.
