What is a tensioned membrane?
Tension membrane, the abbreviation of tension membrane structure, refers to a certain spatial structure formed by prestressing membrane materials in a certain way. In a sense, tents, awnings and umbrellas all belong to a form of tensioned membrane structure, but the tensioned membrane materials used in buildings are generally specially treated synthetic materials.

Tension membrane material is also recognized as the sixth largest building material after brick, stone, concrete, steel and wood. It forms a stable mechanical system through the pre-tension formed together with the bracket and the cable. It can be said that tensioned membrane structure is a kind of structural system that combines architecture and structure perfectly, and its appearance fundamentally overcomes the difficulties encountered by traditional structures in realizing long-span (unsupported) buildings. Tension membrane structure technology has developed rapidly since the middle of last century, and has been widely used in various fields, such as large stadiums, businesses, transportation, environmental protection, cultural landscapes, playgrounds and other facilities.

Tension membrane can be divided into skeleton type, tension type and inflatable type according to its structural mode. According to the classification of membrane materials used, it can be divided into three categories: PVC/PVDF, PFTE and EFTE.
