Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) refers to the symptoms caused by the compression of the median nerve in the meridian of human palm, mainly manifested as pain and numbness of the index finger and middle finger and muscle weakness of thumb. In modern times, more and more people touch and use computers for a long time every day. Most of these surfers repeatedly type on the keyboard and move the mouse every day. Due to long-term intensive, repetitive and excessive activities, wrist joints gradually become paralyzed and painful, and quickly become an increasingly common disease in modern civilization.

Some people call this symptom group different from traditional hand trauma "mouse hand". Its early manifestations are fatigue and numbness of fingers and hands, and some joints will make a slight noise when they move, which is similar to the symptoms of "constrictive tenosynovitis", but it involves more joints than tenosynovitis. Hand surgeons believe that the mouse is more likely to cause hand injuries than the keyboard, because people always concentrate on mechanically moving one or two fingers repeatedly when using the mouse, and with this monotonous and slight activity, they will also strain the ligament of the wrist. Other occupations that may have similar effects, such as musicians, teachers, editors and journalists, architects, miners, etc., are all related to frequent use of hands. A survey in Singapore shows that women are the biggest victims of carpal tunnel syndrome, and their incidence rate is three times higher than that of men, especially those aged 30 to 60. This is because the carpal tunnel of women is usually smaller than that of men, and the median nerve of the wrist is easily compressed. In addition, some pregnant women, patients with rheumatoid arthritis, patients with diabetes and hypertensive thyroid dysfunction may also suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.

Experts remind: use a variety of input methods, don't work in front of the computer for too long, and you need to do something to relax your hands after using the mouse for an hour. A hand surgeon said that guitarists who often work on the computer will not suffer from "mouse hand". Carpal tunnel syndrome belongs to "cumulative trauma disorder", and those with mild condition can be treated with drugs or wrist flexion splint. Patients with severe illness can be cut open.

Putting the mouse on the desktop is harmful to health.

The doctor found that the higher the mouse position, the greater the damage to the wrist; The farther away the mouse is from its body, the greater the damage to its shoulders. Therefore, the mouse should be placed in a slightly lower position, which is equivalent to the height of the elbow when the upper arm is perpendicular to the ground when sitting. The position of the keyboard should be similar to this. Many computer desks don't have a special place to put the mouse, so it is self-evident that putting the mouse on the desktop for a long time will do harm to people.

The distance between the mouse and the body will also be widened because the mouse is placed on the table, and the pressure in this respect will be borne by the shoulders and elbows for a long time, which is also one of the causes of neck-shoulder-wrist syndrome. When the angle between the upper arm and the front body is kept below 45 degrees, the distance between the body and the mouse is appropriate. If it is too far away, the forearm will lean forward with the upper arm and shoulders, causing constant tension in joints and muscles.

Lifting the swivel chair can also prevent "mouse hands"

If it is difficult to adjust the mouse position, you can put the keyboard and mouse on the desktop and then raise the swivel chair. The desktop is relatively low, which shortens the distance between the fuselage and the desktop.

Putting the mouse in a scientific way will greatly reduce the incidence of "mouse hand" and let every office worker who often sits in front of the computer finish his work easily and happily.
