Dr. Sandel believes that muscles can be shaped through constant exercise, so he designed a series of equipment and opened the world's first gym in Stockholm on 1865.
Now when you go to any gym, you will see many people sweating in specially designed sportswear, but these photos taken in the world's first gym are not like this. In the photo, the men are wearing suits, and the women are wearing long skirts that mop the floor, using weight lifting machines to exercise.
These instruments are the brainchild of Dr. Sandel. He is a Swedish doctor and plastic surgeon. He believes that hard exercise can improve the overall physical fitness.
He teaches physical education in Stockholm, but he is distressed that there is not enough time to guide each student alone. In order to solve this problem, he made an instrument out of wood, pulleys and heavy objects, so that everyone could exercise by himself. Customers can adjust the equipment according to their own needs.
A group of old photos taken by 1892 show how people exercised in the Victorian era. The sports equipment invented by Dr. Gustav Sandel looks more like a torture device, which is quite different from the present one.
Ladies wear a mop skirt, and customers can adjust the equipment according to their own needs.
