The traditional dragon boat race of Fuqing National Fitness Games in 2023, hosted by Fuqing Municipal Committee and Fuqing Municipal People's Government, and undertaken by Fuqing Municipal Committee Propaganda Department, Fuqing Municipal Water Conservancy Bureau and Fuqing Municipal Bureau of Culture, Sports and Tourism, was staged on June 18 in the riverway of Liqiao Ancient Street, with 24 teams and 4 visiting teams from various towns and streets (nuclear power, BOE, Changle District and Minhou County) performing wonderfully.

As one of the four traditional festivals in China, Dragon Boat Festival not only clearly records the rich and colorful social life and cultural content of our ancestors, but also accumulates profound historical and cultural connotations. As early as 1988, Fuqing held the International Dragon Boat Championship, and 17 dragon boat teams from seven countries and regions staged a grand event in Dongzhang Reservoir in Fuqing, with tens of thousands of spectators and a sensation.

The Origin of Dragon Boat Race

There are three theories about the origin of dragon boat race. 1 is in memory of Qu Yuan. The reason is that Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet, could not bear to face the pain of national subjugation and chose to throw himself into the river on May 5. The people of Chu were very sad and ran to the river to salvage Qu Yuan's body.

The second way is to commemorate Wu Zixu. Wu Zixu was a general of Chu in the Spring and Autumn Period. He committed suicide for the honor of his country. Later, the entity in Wu Zixu was wrapped in leather and thrown into the river. This day happens to be May 5th, which is the Dragon Boat Festival.

The third argument is that the invasion day says that everyone knows that the Dragon Boat Festival is related to dragons. According to legend, in ancient wuyue, dragons were regarded as totems, so totem sacrifices were held on the fifth day of May every year.
