However, with the transformation of sports management mode from "state management" to "self-development mechanism" in China, great changes have taken place in the economic base and social environment on which sports used to depend. Since 1980s, sports facilities have been involved in the wave of "marketization". Some stadiums have even become "shopping malls" selling furniture and clothing. They have money, but they miss their jobs and lose their basic function of providing sports and fitness places for the public.
Since 1990s, sports, movies, television and concerts have constituted the main contents of urban culture. Sports plus culture has become a popular lifestyle of modern people, and it is also regarded as one of the achievements of urban public cultural services. Sports culture has gradually become a "new industry" with huge business opportunities behind it.
1996, Yuetan Sports Center set aside an area of 2,000 square meters to open a roller skating club, which could accommodate 1000 people at the same time, making it the largest roller skating rink in China at that time.
Star Fitness Club was established in Yuetan Gymnasium, becoming the birthplace of mass aerobics in China. Yuetan's fitness club is famous for its "taste": strong coaching team, complete supporting facilities and advanced equipment, as well as aerobics, equipment bodybuilding, taekwondo, fencing and other projects, which can be said to lead a generation of fitness trends.
Yuetan Gymnasium has also added the Beijing Xuan Yin Fitness Center for the Elderly, children's swimming training classes, and even held the opening ceremonies of various sports meetings and large-scale conferences, opened a cultural dinner theater, and hosted entertainment performances.
The overall environment is not optimistic. Until the end of last century, the added value created by China's sports industry only accounted for 0.57% of GDP, which was far from the target level of 5% in developed countries. The backward level of sports industrialization does not match the international status of competitive sports in China.
Yuetan Sports Center was selected by the Olympic Organizing Committee as the handball and badminton training center for the 2008 Olympic Games. In order to meet the new task, Yuetan Gymnasium began a comprehensive renovation project.
After the completion of Yuetan Sports Center, the wind and rain in the past 20 years have seriously aged the venue, the wall skin has fallen off, the decoration and equipment configuration of the venue are obviously outdated, the steel mesh has rusted in some places, and some old roofs have actually begun to leak rain in rainy days. This situation obviously cannot meet the requirements of modern Olympic training venues.
After more than a year's renovation, Yuetan Sports Center has taken on a new look: besides the overall renovation and seat renovation, Yuetan Gymnasium has also installed a lighting system suitable for badminton training and competition. In order to save energy, the curtain walls suitable for opening on the east and west sides of the original venue have been transformed into lighting systems. At the same time, two large digital screens were installed in the stadium, so that the audience far away from the stands could feel the atmosphere of the game "at close range".
In addition to the renovation of the stadium, the Xicheng District Government of Beijing has also laid a porous blue brick pavement around the stadium, erected a protective fence, increased the night lighting system, and greening and upgrading the surrounding streets.
After the Olympic Games, Yuetan Sports Center will no longer hold roller skating activities that are destructive to the venues, but restore the original appearance of Yuetan Sports Center-"national high-level sports reserve talent base" and public fitness places. Internally, provide training venues for Xicheng District Sports School and strengthen the cultivation of reserve talents in amateur sports schools; Externally, badminton, table tennis, basketball, track and field, swimming pool and other facilities will be opened to the outside world, thus returning to the original appearance of "comprehensive sports facilities group".
