Sunisha Lee grew up in a big family in St. Paul, Minnesota. When the gymnast was a little girl, she practiced on the fake balance beam built by her father. Sunisha-Li's Miao community is not rich. You must understand that this is a difficult sport to enter, especially for the Miao community, because it is too expensive and time-consuming.

Sunisha-Lee's parents sent her to the Midwest Gymnastics Center in Minnesota for gymnastics classes when she was 6 years old. 10 years later, Li is still training there. But the past 17 months have been like a nightmare. Li's gym was closed due to coronavirus. She also broke a foot and two relatives died of coronavirus pneumonia-19. Prior to this, in 20 19, her father, John Lee, fell from a tree while pruning branches, and was seriously injured and paralyzed for life. The accident happened the day before she took part in the American championship. Just after her father's operation, she persisted and took part in the competition.

In Sunisha Lee's hometown of Minnesota, the largest Miao community in the United States cheered for her. According to the 20 10 US Census, the total number of Miao Americans living in the United States is 260,076. Miao families only have 18. Miao people came from Laos, Vietnam and parts of China, and stood on the side of the United States during the Vietnam War.

In the early 1960s, the CIA recruited Miao people to help prevent North Vietnamese from entering neighboring Laos. In return, the United States promises to take care of them and their families. 1975, Laos fell into the hands of communist party, Laos, and the US troops withdrew. Thousands of Miao people fled to neighboring Thailand as refugees and then settled in the United States.

When Suni's parents John Lee and Yev Toji were children, they fled Laos with their families and embarked on a dangerous journey to a refugee camp in Thailand. Their families finally settled in Minnesota and found homes among thousands of Miao people who came to the United States through similar channels. This Miao community is proud of Li's success as a gymnast.

"The Hmong people here are proud to be Americans. We want all Americans to be proud of Sunisha Lee. Her achievements show us the possibility of being in the United States. " A member of Sunisha-Li Miao community family said in an interview that people in the community collectively watched the live broadcast and were excited about Sunisha-Li Miao winning the championship.
